• WM030-073 Castle - ringwork
  Description

  Situated at the NW end of a large ridge, in pasture, with good views of the surrounding landscape, except to SE where overlooked by Knockdomny Hill. A ringfort (WM030-074----) lies c. 140m to NNE and a ringfort (WM030-072----) lies c. 195m to W. Depicted on the revised 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map as a substantial roughly circular-shaped earthwork (approx. overall dims. 108m NW-SE; 104m NE-SW). Cox (1969, 12) indicates that this monument was an O’ Melaghlin seat and it was known down to recent times as “King Malachy’s Fort” and was situated on the boundary between two townlands. Monument described in 1975 as a large circular-shaped area defined by an inner bank, an intervening fosse, a berm, an outer bank and an outer fosse. The inner bank is best preserved from S-SW-W and is steeper and higher on the exterior from NW-N-NE-ENE. There is an intervening fosse and a wide level berm (Wth c. 7-10m). There is a low outer bank and an outer fosse. A causeway entrance is at NE and is defined by a stone-faced passage upslope to the inner bank. The interior (approx. dims. 36m NW-SE; 32m NE-SW) is quite uneven rising towards the centre. The monument is bisected by a drystone wall running NW-SE which forms a townland boundary. The site is densely overgrown with impenetrable vegetation and is difficult to examine. Monument is visible today as a substantial tree-planted earthwork on Digital Globe aerial photography.   Description

  Situated in undulating pasture. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as an oval-shaped earthwork. Depicted on the revised 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map as a roughly trapezoidal-shaped earthwork. A possible medieval ringwork (WM030-073----) lies c. 140m to SSW. Monument is visible today as a roughly D-shaped tree-lined enclosure (approx. diam. 43m N-S) which is defined by a linear field boundary running NW-SE along the W side, on Digital Globe aerial photography. • WM030-096 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a S-facing slope, near the top of a ridge running E-W, in gently undulating pasture, with good views to E, S and W. Depicted on the revised 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map as a roughly oval-shaped earthwork. Monument described in 1979 as an subcircular-shaped area (dims. 39m E-W; 30m N-S) defined by a scarp and external fosse. The scarp is low and has been defaced in places from SE-S, W and NW. There are traces of a low drystone wall built against the scarp at E and S which seem to be the remains of a relatively modern field fence. The fosse is only preserved from N-NE where it is wide and from E-S where it is narrower. There are no signs of an original entrance. The interior is uneven and featureless. A modern field fence running N-S is outside the perimeter to W and a similar field fence running E-W is outside the perimeter at N. Short, disused field fences contact the scarp at NE, SW and NNW. House sites (WM030-096001-) are visible in the centre and in the SE quadrant. Monument is visible today as a tree-planted earthwork on Digital Globe aerial photography.   Description

  Situated on a S-facing slope, near the top of a ridge running E-W, in gently undulating pasture, with good views to E, S and W. In the centre of ringfort (WM030-096----) are the remains of a rectangular house site. The remains of a second, smaller house site adjoins the scarp at SE. OS 25-inch map as a semicircular-shaped earthwork modified by linear field boundaries to S and W. M Levelled monument described in 1973 as no surface remains visible. • WM030-104 Barrow - bowl-barrow
  Description

  Situated on top of a hill with commanding views of the surrounding countryside. Fitzpatrick (2004, 171) has suggested that this bowl-barrow on the summit of Knockdomny Hill is the most likely location of 'Tulach Mic Amhalghaidh' [Tullymagawly] which was the inauguration place of the Magawley clan. In 1579 and 1599 the townland of Knockdomny was recorded as the inauguration place of the chief of the Mic Amhalghaidh (ibid.). Monument consists of a small circular mound (top diam. c. 5m; base diam. 10m; H c. 2m) of earth and stones enclosed by a shallow fosse (Wth c. 2m; ext. D c. 0.35m) with external bank which is destroyed at E. There is some evidence of recent disturbance on the summit of the mound. A limestone flag is visible on the summit. The summit of this mound was used by the Ordnance Survey as an OD station for the spot height of 515 ft on 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. No antiquity is depicted at this location on the 1837 ed.   Description

  Situated in pasture, on SE-facing slope of Knockdomny Hill. Annotated 'Fort' on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map and depicted as a roughly circular-shaped earthwork (diam. 35m). Depicted on the 1837 OS 6-inch map as a roughly oval-shaped earthwork. Not depicted on the revised 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map. Levelled ringfort described in 1973 as a slight depression in the field, indicating the position of the fosse on the E side of the earthwork. Otherwise there are no other surface remains visible.   Description

  In the centre of a partially dried up pond on poorly drained pasture at base of N facing slop of Knockdomny Hill. Depicted as a small pond with stream or water outlet at SSE on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. No antiquity depicted inside the pond on this map. Oval-shaped mound (H 1m; dims. c.8m E-W; c.3.5m N-S) the base of which is defined by an external water-filled fosse (Wth c.2.2m top; Wth 0.8m base; D c.0.9m) visible from WSW-N-ESE with causeway (Wth c.1.8m) at NNW. Fosse or moat supplied with water flowing from pond adjoining to SSE. Depicted on revised ed. OS 6-inch map as circular feature (diam. c.9m) with no pond area shown as it had been reclaimed by this period. According to landowner, this is an artificial feature constructed to counteract winter flooding in this field, it is unclear exactly how it serves this particular function.   Description

  No surface remains visible of hollow depression which is depicted on the revised 1874 ed. OS 6-inch map. On the 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map the feature is clearly shown as a small sunken area or hollow (dims. c. 10m NW-SE; c. 8m NE-SW) possibly the result of shallow quarrying. According to landowner, this was a low mound which was levelled out a number of years ago.
