- WM002-007 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated on a low rise of reclaimed pasture-land with good views to E & S and moderate views to N & W. Ringfort (WM002-009----) 60m to S. Circular area (diam. 48m) defined by wide low earthen bank (int. H 1m; ext. H 2-2.5m) best preserved at N where if forms part of a modern field boundary and shallow traces of a fosse with external bank visible at NW only. The interior is uneven, rising gently towards the centre from inside the bank. There is a disturbance gap in the bank on the WSW and another on the NW. A gap on the SSE looks as if it is due to disturbance also and there is a modern road leading up to it from the outside. The fosse is almost completely filled up most of the way round. - WM002-009 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated on the SSE side of a low natural rise of ground on reclaimed pasture-land. Ringfort (WM002-007----) 65m to N, ringfort (WM002-008----) 220m to SSW, ringfort (WM002-006----) 340m to W. Oval-shaped area (diam. 41m NW-SE; 26m NE-SW) defined by a low bank mainly reduced to a scarp and shallow external fosse with no entrance feature visible. Old cultivation ridges run NW-SE across the interior of the monument. See attached profile of monument surveyed and drawn by the ASI. - WM002-010 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated on a gentle SW slope of a low natural rise of poorly drained pasture with bog to the N. Heavily overgrown circular area (diam. 32m) defined by two tree-lined earthen banks with intervening water-logged fosse, a wide gap at NE may have been the original entrance that was later widened when the enclosing banks at this side were levelled. At SE a modern field fence running NE-SW cuts between the two banks. The interior is boggy and supports some rushes. See attached profile of monument surveyed and drawn by the ASI. Description
Detached three-bay two-storey former railway station, built 1856, with single-storey box bay window to south elevation and a single-storey lean-to extension enclosed within walled yard to the rear (east). Later is use as a private house and now unoccupied. Hipped natural slate roof with overhanging eaves, clay ridge tiles, cast-iron rainwater goods and a single rendered chimneystack, aligned behind roof ridge, having terracotta chimneypots over. Constructed of coursed rubble limestone with flush dressed limestone quoins to corners and brick dressings to openings. Square-headed window openings with two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows and cut stone sills. Paired one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows to box bay window (south). Central segmental-headed doorcase to west façade (overlooking former platform) having glazed timber door, plain overlight and a gabled canopy porch over. Former railway platforms to the west, either side of former railway line having rubble limestone constructed with dressed limestone coping over. Rubble limestone screen walls to either side of front elevation having square-headed openings. Remains of former goods shed to the north.
