• WM015-014 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on top of a slight natural rise in gently undulating grassland on the demesne lands of Littletown House standing 120m to S. Remains consist of a slightly raised circular-shaped area (approx. diam. 24m NE-SW) enclosed by a low poorly preserved earthen bank and a very slight narrow fosse. The interior is level. It appears to have been used as a tree-ring in the past. Not depicted as an antiquity on any edition of the OS 6-inch maps. May be the remains of a tree-ring of post-1700 date associated with landscaping of the demesne of Littletown House. See attached profile of monument surveyed and drawn by the ASI. • WM015-015 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on top of a natural rise in gently undulating grassland, with good views in all directions. Ringfort (WM015-020----) 190m to SW. The field fence which forms the boundary with Coolaleena lies 5m to SW. A slightly raised large sub-circular-shaped area (approx. diam. 37m N-S; 36m E-W) enclosed by a low earthen bank and a slight external fosse. The bank has several disturbance gaps and the fosse has been filled in at N. The interior is level, and a long narrow depression visible in the E quadrant may be the remains of a collapsed souterrain (WM015-015001-). • WM015-016 Castle - unclassified
  Description

  According to the Ordnance Survey Letters Littleton Castle belonged to the Dillon's (RIA 14/G/13/3(19)). A rectangular structure depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map, 80m S of the ruins of Littletown House may have been the site of Littletown Castle. O'Donovan recorded that there was 'no castle in Littletown. There are ruins just south of Littletown House, query Castle?' (OSL) The ruins mentioned in the OS letters are depicted on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map as a small rectangular-shaped ruin aligned NE-SW which may have been the remains of Littletown Castle. No surface remains visible of the structure in the area marked on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map. A small hollow depression is now visible at this location. • WM015-028 Designed landscape - tree-ring
  Description

  Cropmark of levelled tree-ring in grassland visible on 2013-2018 MapGenie satellite imagery.  Found as part of an assessment of a nearby afforestation licence application. Circular cropmark with an internal diameter of 19m. Recorded on the 25-inch OS map. Located some 88m W of a ringfort (WM015-027----). May also be a tree-ring associated with Littletown House (in ruins) or Lodge (demolished)? There may also be a possible road running in a curvilinear direction around this feature leading to a castle site (WM015-016----). Clearly visible on aerial photographs. On the 6-inch OS map this is depicted as a wooded area.
