• WM036-018 Castle - tower house
  Description

  Clonlonan Castle ruins stands in pasture, adjacent to a modern farm complex. A horizontal water mill (WM036-020----) lies c. 140m to ESE and a bullaun stone (WM036-019----) lies c. 190m to E. Depicted on the revised 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map as a rectangular-shaped building to N and W of a farm complex with its long axis orientated N-S. According to Cox (1972, 33-34) this was a chief seat of the O’Melaghlin clan around 1548 which was taken by the Baron of Delvin and the English of Athlone in 1553. Poorly preserved ruins of Clonlonan Castle described in 1979 as a rectangular-shaped building defined by the ivy clad remains of the W wall (approx. H 25ft / 8m) with traces of a short return on the NW corner. The W wall is quite thick and there are traces of a low foundation plinth. The masonry comprises of large and small stones and is generally of poor quality. The quoin stones have been robbed out. There is a window opening at first floor level. • WM036-020 Water mill - horizontal-wheeled
  Description

  Horizontal watermill located on wet marshy land with bullaun stone (WM036-019---) 20m to NE and castle (WM036-018---) 150m to WNW. In 1980 the following was recorded about this horizontal mill it was ‘found in a field-drainage operation in 1965, the drain being enlarge on the edge of marginal land on the slightly rising ground towards Moate. This must at one time have been a small rivulet or stream with a relatively small flow of water. Nothing now remain of the mill at the original find-spot. Some 20m away in the next field is a bullaun stone (WM036-019----) to the NE. Thus the mill may be associated with a church site as in so many other cases. The side-beams from the site have been removed for use as a field-fence in the next field. One of these is 2.7m long, and is squared 0.3m x 0.28m. This is of oak. Another plank from the floor of the wheelhouse is 1.7m long, 30cm wide and 10cm thick. Both are of oak. The plank was taken for dating by dendro-chronological examination. In the corner of the field where the mill was found, half of the upper stone of the mill was recovered. It has a fine raised lip around the central hole, and is a millstone grit type of rock’ (SMR File 07/10/1980). Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 22 July 2015

• WM036-021 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated in rough pasture, which is overlooked by higher ground. Monument described in 1977 as a roughly circular-shaped raised area (diam. 34m) defined by a scarp and external fosse. The scarp is very gradual in slope and is best preserved at SE, however is poorly defined from SSE-S-SSW. The external fosse is best preserved from NNE-NE-ENE. The interior is fairly level and has no obvious features. A field fence runs WNW-ESE across the S quadrant. Partial outline of levelled monument is visible today on Digital Globe aerial photography.
