• WM012-077 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on W facing slope of hill in grassland with extensive views from S-W-N. Motte and bailey (WM012-079----) 140m to NE, Taghmon church (WM012-076----) and castle (WM012-074----) 330m and 460m to the NNW respectively. Depicted on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map as a broad circular shaped earthwork annotated as ‘fort’. This site now consists of a slightly raised sub-rectangular shaped area (approx. diam. 24m N-S; 21m E-W) enclosed by an earth and stone bank and shallow external fosse with possible entrance gap (Wth 2.3m) at SW. The bank and fosse are only visible from SE-S-NW. A field fence running E-W which is the townland boundary with Taghmon intersects the perimeter of the site at N. A curving field fence which is the townland boundary with Glebe forms the NE perimeter of the monument. A field boundary at NE represents the townland boundary with Glebe. Traces of cultivation ridges are visible running E-W across the interior of the monument. Outline of monument is visible on aerial photographs taken in 1970 (CUCAP BDV079/080).   Description

  Situated on NNE facing slope of a ridge with good views from NW to N. Depicted on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map as a circular shaped earthwork annotated as ‘fort’. This site was levelled in the mid-1960s. All that remains is a raised circular area (approx. diam. 30m N-S; 26m E-W) defined by a scarp with traces of a fosse at S and WSW.   Description

  Situated on SE facing slope of a gently rising hill in grassland, with good views to the W and NNE. A raised circular-shaped area (approx. diam. 37m NW-SE; 36m NE-SW) enclosed by a very low poorly preserved earthen bank and a slight external fosse. The bank has been reduced to little more than a scarp, and the fosse has been filled in from ENE-ESE. There is an entrance gap (Wth 2.1m) at ENE.   Description

  Situated on SW facing slope of a ridge running NE-SW . No surface remains visible of monument which was levelled c. 1980. Described in this year as a sub-rectangular shaped enclosure (approx. dims. 16m NW-SE; 24m NE-SW) enclosed by a low earthen bank and shallow external fosse that is visible on the NE and SW sides, and extends from the E side of the monument in an ESE direction (approx.   Description

  Situated on a slight rise on SW facing of large ridge in gently undulating grassland, with good views to the W and NW. Possible ringfort (WM012-148----) and moated site (WM012-149---) 96m and 150m to W respectively. A slightly raised sub-circular shaped area (approx. diam. 30m NE-SW) enclosed by a substantial earthen bank and a wide shallow external fosse. The bank is visible from SE-S-SW and reduced to a scarp elsewhere. The slight fosse is visible from N-E-SE. Traces of cultivation ridges are visible running NNE-SSW across the interior, which rises slightly towards the centre. A road and field fence running N-S intersect the W side of the monument, and a field fence running E-W intersects the S side of the site. • WM012-151 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on top of a high hillock in grassland, with good views of surrounding undulating countryside. A raised circular-shaped area (approx. diam. 32m E-W) enclosed by two earth and stone banks and an intervening fosse with causewayed entrance gap (Wth 5m) at E. There are modern gaps in the bank at N, WNW, SW & SSW.. The inner bank is low and fragmentary, and the fosse is slight. The outer bank is low, and best preserved from S-NW and has been removed by a road at S and a field fence at NE. The interior slopes towards the E, and contains several humps and hollows, but do not form a recognisable pattern.   Situated on top of a steep rise in gently undulating grassland. A slightly raised circular shaped area (approx. diam. 20m NE-SW) enclosed by a poorly preserved earth and stone bank and a slight external fosse which is visible at NE and SW. A field fence running NE-SW intersects the perimeter of the monument at SE. This site is now covered in trees as shown on Digital Globe aerial photograph taken November 2011. Depicted as a bivallate ringfort on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map and as a univallate monument intersected at SE by a 19th century field boundary on the revised 1911 ed. OS 25-inch map.   Situated in grassland with good views in all directions. No surface remains visible of levelled monument. The slightest suggestion of a cropmark of the levelled monument is visible on Digital Globe aerial photograph taken November 2011. Small oval-shaped earthwork depicted on 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map but not indicated on revised 1911 edition of the OS 6-inch map suggesting that the monument was levelled between these dates.   Situated on a small prominent hillock in undulating countryside with commanding views in all directions. Ringfort (WM012-157----) lies 220m to SE. Depicted on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map as a circular-shaped enclosure annotated ‘Rathcloghrin’. Poorly preserved ringfort which has been substantially levelled and is now visible as a circular shaped area (approx. diam. 25m NW-SE; 28m NE-SW) defined by a scarp.   Description

  Situated on a prominent rise in gently undulating grassland, with views restricted by surrounding land. The road which marks the townland boundary with Clonkill lies 80m to S. Ringfort (WM012-155----) lies 220m to NW, and earthwork (WM012-158---) lies 200m to NE. A raised sub-circular-shaped area (approx. diam. 31m NW-SE; 26m NE-SW) enclosed by a substantial earthen bank and a shallow external fosse best preserved from E-S-W, but visible all the way round. There is an entrance gap (Wth 1.2m) and causeway across the fosse at E. Traces of cultivation ridges are visible running NNW-SSE across the interior, which slopes slightly to SE.   Situated on a low ridge in undulating grassland with good views all around. Ringfort (WM012-157---) 200m to NE. Depicted on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map as an oval-shaped enclosure annotated as ‘fort’ with a gravel pit immediately to SW and limekiln to N. Poorly preserved monument consisting of a curve in the field fence from SW-W-NW which preserves the enclosing bank of the levelled ringfort.
