  Description

  Situated on a natural rise in undulating grassland, on the demesne lands of Mount Murray House located 540m to SSE. The tree-lined earthwork visible on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map was located immediately W to the avenue leading up to Mount Murray with gate lodge 115m to N. Lough Owel is visible 320m to SE. Depicted on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map as a circular shaped earthwork annotated as a ‘fort’. No surface remains of this levelled monument. At the time of the site visit in 1972 the field had been ploughed and all was visible was a circular shaped area (approx. diam. 29.4m NE-SW; 28m NW-SE) with remains of a shallow fosse (Wth 8.2m; D 0.3m) from ESE-S-NNW. The interior slopes slightly from WSW-ENE and contains scatters of burnt stone, bone and teeth. This levelled site is visible as a crop mark on Digital Globe aerial photograph taken November 2011.   Description

  Situated on a high prominent hill in grassland on the demesne lands of Mount Murray overlooking Lough Owel 140m to E. Mount Murray house located 375m to NNW. Depicted on the 1837 OS Fair Plan as a circular enclosure and annotated ‘fort’. No surface remains visible of this levelled monument. A circular shaped area (approx. diam. 19m E-W) enclosed by a light-coloured band of vegetation (Wth 2.9m) marks the site of the levelled monument. The interior has vague traces of cultivation ridges which run N-S. There is a small depression W of centre which along with L-shaped vegetation growth may suggest the presence of a souterrain. This possible ringfort was located at NE end of a tree plantation on the demesne lands of Mount Murray and it is likely that the monument may have been reused as a landscape feature.   Description

  Detached five-bay two-storey over basement country house, built c.1780 and remodeled c.1820 with addition of semi-circular bow to southeast façade. Two-storey extensions to rear (northwest). Modern single-bay single-storey porch to entrance front. Now in use as a private dwelling. Low hipped natural slate roof with cut stone chimneystacks and terracotta chimneypots. Roughcast rendered walls with square-headed window openings with six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows. Tripartite timber sliding sash windows to northeast elevation. Central round-headed doorcase behind later porch with cut limestone block-and-start surround, timber panelled door and plain fanlight over. Glazed timber door and sidelights to porch. Set back from the road in extensive mature grounds, overlooking Lough Owel, with complex of outbuildings to the rear (west).
