  Description

  Situated in low-lying, rough pasture with very wet and boggy ground to N and W and scrub to S and E. Not depicted on the 1837 OS 6-inch map or the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map. Described as ‘Dunlis Castle (site of)’ (SMR file). Monument described in 1981 as no surface remains visible. At the location marked on the OS map there is a large mound which appears to be a natural rock outcrop. Immediately around the base of the mound there is a swampy area with reeds and rushes. There is a raised roughly rectangular-shaped platform on top of the mound which could potentially delineate the foundation of a building, although there are no standing remains of the castle. The mound has been severely pock-marked by quarrying. At the E end of the mound there is a small raised, rectangular-shaped area which appears to have been a cultivation patch with lazy beds and a drainage ditch running beside it. • WM020-105 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a high natural rise, in gently undulating pasture, with good views in all directions. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as a hexagonal-shaped earthwork and on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as a D-shaped earthwork (approx. dims. 66m WNW-ESE; 46m NNE-SSW). Monument described in 1970 as a subrectangular-shaped earthwork enclosed by two widely-spaced, steep scarps. The inner scarp (H c. 1.1m) has no traces of a bank, yet the outer scarp has vague suggestions of having had a bank. A modern fence runs E-W across the N sector, cutting through the perimeter of the monument at NW and NE. There is no trace of the monument to N of the fence, where the scarps are levelled from NW-N-NE. There is no intervening fosse, but an outer fosse is visible from SW-S-E, which is best preserved from SE-E, yet is disturbed in places by old quarry depressions. The original entrance is not visible. The interior rises appreciably from the perimeter towards the centre and has definite traces of cultivation ridges running NW-SE. Monument is visible as a roughly D-shaped, partially tree-planted earthwork on Digital Globe aerial photography. Compiled by Alison McQueen, Vera Rahilly and Caimin O’Brien.   Description

  Situated on a natural rise, in gently undulating pasture, with good views in all directions. Annotated 'Fort' 1837 OS Fair Plan map. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as an oval-shaped earthwork (approx. dims. 40m N-S; 35m E-W). Monument described in 1970 as traces of an oval-shaped earthwork which is bisected by a modern field fence running WNW-ESE. The perimeter is defined by a short segment of well-defined scarp (H 1.5m) at W with a modern trench (Wth at top 2.6m; basal Wth 1.5m; D 0.45m) at the base and by a very vague scarp from SE-S-SW. The monument appears to have been destroyed in the process of quarrying of rock. Monument is not visible on Digital Globe aerial photography due to shadow cast by field boundary running E-W.   Description

  Situated on a slight rise, in gently undulating pasture. Ringfort (WM027-004----) lies c. 125m to SW. Depicted as a circular-shaped earthwork on the Longford Estate map 1813 and on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map as a subtriangular-shaped tree-lined enclosure, annotated ‘Fort’. Depicted on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as a roughly oval-shaped bivallate earthwork. Levelled monument described in 1971 as no surface remains visible. Boulders set against the modern field boundary to SE may have belonged to the levelled monument. The site would have been suitable for a ringfort.   Description

  Situated on NE-facing slope of a gentle rise, in pasture. Depicted on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as a roughly oval-shaped bivallate earthwork. Monument described in 1971 as a much disturbed circular-shaped area (diam. 23.6m) enclosed by a bank, a fosse and an outer bank. The inner bank is steep on the exterior. There is a wide U-shaped fosse visible rom W-S-SSE. There is a steep, narrow tree-lined outer bank visible from SSE-S-W much of which has been quarried at N, SE and WNW. The ground outside the outer bank has been quarried from N-NE-ENE and the hole partially backfilled with tree roots. The original entrance is not recognisable.   Situated on a slight rise, in gently undulating pasture, overlooking bog to S and SW. Ringfort (WM027-001----) lies c. 125m to NE. Depicted on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map as an oval-shaped enclosure annotated ‘fort’, with a small circular-shaped enclosure inside it. Levelled monument described in 1971 as no surface remains visible. There are large boulders piled against the modern field boundary at NW which may have come from the monument. • Level crossing, 1845–1850 · Regional interest
  Description

  Pair of level crossing gates, erected c.1848, formerly serving the Midland and Great Western Railway Company's Dublin (Broadstone) to Mullingar line. Comprises timber beams with wire mesh having early cast-iron fittings, including a cast-iron lamp and cast-iron bracing bars. Pedestrian gates to either end. Located to the southwest of Mullingar. Former crossing guards house now demolished.

• Bridge, 1940–1960 · Regional interest
  Description

  Lifting or bascule bridge associated with the Royal Canal, built c.1950. Constructed of steel with the deck balanced by counter-weights to the north side. Allows access to farm complex to the west whilst maintaining canal use. Resting on concrete piers. Located to the southwest of Mullingar and to the west of Kinnegad.

• Woodford, house, 1780–1820 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached five-bay two-storey over partially raised basement house, built c.1800 and altered c.1850, having a single-storey rubble stone outbuilding attached to the north gable end. Pitched natural slate roof with projecting eaves course, cast-iron rainwater goods and a rendered chimneystack to either gable end (north and south). Roughcast rendered walls over smooth rendered plinth with raised cement rendered quoins to the corners. Square-headed window openings having cement rendered surrounds and replacement windows. Central round-headed doorcase with architraved cut stone surround, timber panelled door having a plain fanlight over. Flight of steps flanked by rendered walls gives access to doorway. Set back from road in mature grounds to the east of Mullingar and to the west of Killucan.

  Description

  Weir and sluice/overflow associated with the Royal Canal, built c.1806. Constructed of dressed limestone. Located to the southwest of Mullingar and adjacent to lifting bridge (15402709).
