• WM019-067 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a small rise (108m/353ft) at the S edge of a bog, with good views in all directions. Depicted on the 1837 OS 6-inch map as an oval-shaped enclosure. Depicted on the revised 1913 ed. OS 6-inch map as an oval-shaped earthwork bisected by a public road. Monument described in 1970 as a bivallate roughly circular-shaped area (dims. 33m NNE-SSW; 29m WNW-ESE) enclosed by two earthen banks with corresponding fosses and a causewayed entrance visible at S where there is a gap (Wth at top 5.4m; basal Wth 3m) in the inner bank, a gap (Wth at top 3.6m; basal Wth 2.1m) in the outer bank and a causeway (max. Wth at top 3.3m; max. basal Wth 5.6m; max. H 0.4m) across the fosse. The centre of the monument is bisected by a public road running WNW-ESE. The inner bank is almost reduced to a scarp yet drops steeply on the exterior. A shallow intervening fosse is visible from NNE-E-S-WNW. There are indications of a berm between the intervening fosse and outer bank from WSW-W. The outer bank is best preserved from E-S-W and is almost completely denuded from W-N-E. Traces of an outer fosse are present from SSE-S-W. The perimeter has been defaced from E-SE during construction of a modern field fence running NNE-SSW. The interior rises slightly from the perimeter towards the centre. Monument is visible on Digital Globe aerial photography as a tree-covered monument to N of public road and as a tree-lined enclosure to S. • WM019-068 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on top of a low rise, in gently undulating pasture, directly overlooking bog to N and with good views in all directions. Depicted on the 1837 OS 6-inch map as an oval-shaped tree-lined earthwork. Levelled monument that was upstanding in 1970 when it was described as the remains of a roughly circular-shaped area (approx. dims. 31m ENE-WSW; 29m NNW-SSE) defined by a slight earthen bank with traces of an external fosse visible from SSE-S-SW. The perimeter is represented by a very slight scarp (approx. H 0.5m) with a slight external fosse visible from NW-N-NE. The original entrance is not visible. The interior has traces of cultivation ridges running E-W. A modern field fence intersected both ends of the bank. An ESB pole is on the bank at SW. • WM019-070 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on the S side of a gentle rise, in good pasture with good views to E, SE and SW. Depicted on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as an oval-shaped earthwork. Monument described in 1970 as a roughly oval-shaped area (32.5m NNW-SSE; 31.00m ENE-WSW) enclosed by an earthen bank and external fosse. The bank (int. H 1.2m; ext. H 2.1m; Wth at top 0.6m; max. Wth 6.5m) is best preserved from S-W-N-NNE and is very fragmentary where it is reduced to a scarp from NNE-E-S. The scarp has been quarried at ESE. The original entrance is not recognisable, although there is a modern gap at NW. The fosse is (Wth at top 3.6m; D 0.15m) best preserved from NW-N-NE and is barely perceptible from ENE-E-SE.   Description

  Situated on top of a gentle, yet prominent rise, in pasture, with good views of the surrounding landscape. Ringfort (WM020-064----) lies c. 75m to SE. Depicted on the revised 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as a circular-shaped earthwork. Monument described in 1976 as a low, circular-shaped round topped mound (dims. 19.2m N-S; 18.9m E-W; H 1.1m). No visible trace of a fosse. • WM020-064 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on top of a rise, in gently undulating pasture, with good views of the surrounding landscape. Possible burial mound (WM020-063----) lies c. 75m to NW. Depicted on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as an irregular-shaped earthwork. Monument described in 1970 as a much disturbed irregular-shaped area (approx. dims. 28m NW-SE; 22m NE-SW) which appears to have been oval-shaped before a large portion was demolished. It is enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth at top 0.35m; overall Wth 2.5m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 1.1m) from SSE-S-W-N which is almost reduced to a scarp. The perimeter and surface of the interior have been quarried away from S-SSW-WSW. A wide shallow fosse is visible from SSE-S-W. The original entrance is not recognisable. The interior has a gentle NNW-facing slope and there is a slight depression in the S quadrant. Monument is visible today as an irregular-shaped earthwork on Digital Globe aerial photography.   Description

  Single-arch bridge, built c.1810, carrying rural road over small stream. Constructed of squared rubble limestone with dressed limestone voussoirs. Modern concrete water channel to east side. Parapet to west side of bridge now partially damaged. Located to the west of Killucan.
