- WM017-016 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated on W facing slope of rising ground, surrounded by poor grassland. A circular shaped area (approx. diam. 25m E-W) enclosed by a low poorly preserved earth and stone bank mainly reduced to a scarp with very slight remains of an external fosse. The bank has evidence of internal stone facing visible from NE-SW. The interior is uneven and contains dumps of stone. A relict field bank has levelled the perimeter of the monument at NE. - WM017-022 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated on a natural hillock, in relatively low lying, rough pasture with extensive views in all directions, except where limited to NE by a distant ridge. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as a circular-shaped area (diam. 33m) defined by a bank with external fosse, encircled on the exterior by a line of trees. Irishtown River lies c. 140m to NE. Depicted on the revised 1913 ed. OS 25-inch map as a sub-oval shaped area defined by a scarp and having a field boundary which lies c. 15m to E. Surrounding field has been drained and planted with forestry in recent years (Digital Globe; Bing; Google Earth 24/03/2017). Monument described in 1975 as a roughly oval-shaped enclosure defined by the remains of a bank which is reduced to a steep scarp and having the slight remains of an external fosse. The bank is occupied by thorn bushes and briars. An outer earthen bank is evident in places which may form part of a field boundary. There is no obvious entrance. The interior rises appreciably from the perimeter towards the centre and is disturbed by digging of relatively modern date. A second report from 1980 described the monument as a roughly circular-shaped area (38.5m NNE-SSW; 38m WNW-ESE) defined by a bank, intervening fosse and an outer bank, which has been much defaced during land reclamation works. The poorly preserved inner bank only survives from NNE-E and from S-W and has the remains of internal and external stone facing from NNE-E. The intervening fosse survives from SSE-E and has been partially defaced by the recent land works, having some boulders dumped within at W. There are no enclosing elements from E-SSE. There is no obvious entrance. The interior rises unevenly towards the centre, having been extensively disturbed, whereby there is a large depression off-centre to S & SE with other smaller depressions across most of the N, E & S quadrants. - WM010-024 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated on a slight natural rise surrounded by gently undulating grassland. Ringfort (WM010-025----) 360m to NE. A slightly raised circular-shaped area (approx. diam 30m N-S) enclosed by two earthen banks and an intervening wide deep fosse. The inner bank is substantial, while the poorly preserved outer bank is only faintly visible from S-W-NW. There is an entrance gap (Wth 2.6m) and causeway (Wth 5.8m; H 0.6m) through the inner bank and fosse at SSE. The interior slopes slightly from S-N. Description
Situated on rushy grassland with good views of the surrounding countryside. An uneven sub-circular shaped raised area (approx. diam. 26m N-S; 29m E-W) defined by a scarp revetted with dry stone walling. Traces of cultivation ridges are visible running N-S across the interior of the monument. An oval shaped depression in the NW quadrant may be the remains of a house site (WM010-025001-). Description
Situated on a slight rise in gently undulating grassland, with some wet, rushy land in the vicinity. Ringfort (WM010-025----) 160m to N. Ringfort (WM010-024----) 340m to W. A sub-circular shaped raised area (approx. diam. 28m N-S) enclosed by an earth & stone bank and a slight external fosse. The bank has several disturbance gaps, and has some areas of dry stone external facing. The fosse also appears to have been steepened in places. Description
Situated on a slight rise with evidence of rock outcrop in gently undulating grassland. A sub-circular shaped area (approx. diam. 36m N-S; 33m E-W) enclosed by two earthen banks and an intervening fosse with an external fosse. The inner bank is fragmentary, best preserved from NNE-NE & S. The outer bank is visible though fragmentary from E-S-W, and elsewhere has been replaced by a field fence. There is a wide flat intervening space between the banks where they are visible. An L-shaped depression in the interior may represent a souterrain (WM010-027001-). Two lengths of a grass covered bank to the W of centre of the interior may represent a rectangular house site (WM010-027002-), while a second house site (WM010-027003-) is visible in the NE quadrant. Description
Situated on a slight natural rise in gently undulating slightly rushy grassland. Ringfort (WM010-029----) 200m to SSE. The Irishtown River which forms the boundary with Lakingstown is 120m to NE. A sub-circular shaped raised area (approx. diam. 19m N-S; 21m E-W) enclosed by a poorly preserved bank of earth and stone and a slight external fosse with entrance gap at ESE (Wth 3.2m). The bank is best preserved from SW-W-WNW and at NNW, but almost completely levelled elsewhere. The fosse is visible from SW-W-N. The interior slopes from N-S and contains vague traces of cultivation ridges. The faint outline of a circular house site (WM010-028001-) is visible in N quadrant. Situated on the W face of a small natural ridge in slightly undulating grassland, with extensive views in all directions. The field fence which forms the townland boundary with Paddinstown Upper lies 50m to S. Depicted as a circular shaped enclosure on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map (approx. diam 36m E-W), the N quadrant of the site has been reduced to a scarp in the past (post-1837). An earthen bank and slight external fosse are visible curving from NE-S-W.
