  Description

  Situated on a slight NNW facing slope in relatively low lying grassland, surrounded by hilly land from N-E-S. The stream which marks the townland boundary with Piercefield lies 25m to the N. An oval shaped area (approx. diam. 33m N-S; 37m E-W) enclosed by two earthen banks and wide shallow intervening fosse with a slight outer fosse. The outer bank and fosse are only visible from SW-S-SSE. There is an entrance gap (Wth 1.2m) in the inner bank at NW and a corresponding gap (Wth 1m) in the outer bank. • WM011-097 House - fortified house
  Description

  Piercefield Castle was possibly named after Captain Pierce of Tristernagh a Protestant landowner who is the owner of 460 acres of land in Templeoran as recorded in the terrier of the 1654-9 Down Survey map of Templeoran parish (NLI, MS 723-4). The castle may have passed into the hands of Andrew Wilson in the second half of the 17th century. A mansion house in 'Piersfield' belonging to Andrew Wilson of Shinglis born c. 1640 and founder of Wilson Hospital is mentioned in his will of 1724 (Anon. 1813,119, 127). He died in 1725 and Wilson's Hospital was completed in 1761 (ibid.). Situated on a low natural rise in well drained grassland with wide views from W-N. Depicted on the revised 1911 ed. OS 25 inch map as a rectangular building aligned E-W with rectangular shaped field immediately to N that is depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. On this map a field boundary or wall runs runs W from centre of W gable of castle. The rectangular field immediately N of the castle is not indicated on the revised 1911 ed. OS 25-inch map. In 1966 the site of the castle was described as all that remains IS a sunken rectangular shaped area (approx.dims. 24m E-W x 8m N-S; D 1.5m) defined by low grass-covered wall footings with no upstanding remains visible. This sunken area marked the site of the castle which may have been a 17th century rectangular-shaped fortified house rather than a square-shaped medieval tower house. the sunken area or castle site stood on the NW corner of a larger levelled rectangular enclosure (approx. dims. 120m x 120m) which may represent the remains of a bawn (WM011-097001-) or walled garden associated with Piercefield Castle. An ASI report from 1978 recorded the presence of the rectangular depression (approx. dims. 23m E-W x 10m N-S) which marked the site of Piercefield Castle. The sunken area was defined by a low grass-covered wall footings along N, S and E sides. A linear ditch running W from the W wall of the castle site was also visible. A quarry hole at S appears to have removed the S wall. (This sunken area stood within a rectangular enclosure (approx. dims. 55m N-S; 35m E-W), part of a wider area of other earthworks (approx. dims. 100m N-S; 130m E-W). The access road for a sports field now runs through the centre of Piercefield Castle site that is clearly visible on Digital Globe aerial photograph taken November 2011.   Description

  Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map and annotated as ‘Templeoran Church’ where it is depicted standing in the centre of a circular shaped graveyard or ‘Burying Ground’ (WM011-099001-). The poorly preserved ivy-covered building (approx. dims. 17m E-W; 7m N-S) is aligned ENE-WSW. The only visible section of the walls are the W gable and the grass-covered wall footings of the SW angle of the church. Part of the WSW wall survives to a height of 2.5m. No architectural features or cut stones visible. The circular shaped graveyard boundary may follow the line of an Early Christian ecclesiastical enclosure (WM011-099002-).   Description

  Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map and annotated as ‘Templeoran Church’ (WM011-098----) where it is depicted standing in the centre of a circular shaped graveyard or ‘Burying Ground’. A circular shaped graveyard (approx. diam. 47m N-S; 45m E-W) enclosed by a stone wall of post 1700 date. In the centre there are the ruins of Templeoran Church (WM011-099---) and tombstones dating from the 18th-20th centuries.   Description

  Swan (1988, 14) recorded that the small enclosure around the graveyard (WM011-099001-) of Templeoran Church (WM011-099----) represented the remains of an Early Christian ecclesiastical enclosure. The post-1700 graveyard boundary is approximately circular in plan and may indicate the line of a monastic enclosure. There are no earthworks visible in the surrounding fields around Templeoran graveyard. • WM011-100 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a gentle NW facing slope overlooked by nearby ridge to the SE, with good views to the W & N. Templeoran Church (WM011-099----) and graveyard (WM011-099001-) 600m to WSW. A raised sub-circular shaped area (approx. diam. 35m N-S; 34m E-W) enclosed by a poorly preserved earthen bank and a external slight fosse, an intervening space (Wth 5.5m) and an outer fosse. The inner fosse is best preserved from ESE-S-W. The outer fosse is only visible from E-S-SW. There is a possible entrance gap (Wth 2.2m) at NE. The interior slopes slightly from NW-SE and has vague traces of broad cultivation ridges which run NW-SE. A rectangular mound (WM011-100001-) is visible in the interior which may be the remains of a collapsed house site. A field drain aligned NW-SE runs past the site at NE, possibly intersecting the outer fosse, while a field fence running NNW-SSE intersects the perimeter of the monument from SW-W.   Description

  Situated on a small natural rise, surrounded by gently undulating grassland with good views from NW-NE. Moated site (WM011-098----) 320m to NE, Ringfort (WM011-102----) 30m to SE, Piercefield Castle (WM011-097----) 350m to NW. Depicted on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map as a roughly circular earthwork annotated as a ‘fort’. Depicted as a circular shaped enclosure on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. Not indicated on the revised 1911 ed. OS 25-inch map. It appears to have been constructed against the W side of the road which marks the boundary with Grangegeeth townland. No surface remains visible of this site that was probably levelled between 1837 and 1911. A modern dwelling house and garden have been built on the site of the levelled enclsure which us visible on Digital Globe aerial photograph taken November 2011. Not visible at ground level.   Description

  Situated on top of a prominent hill in grassland with good views. The public road which forms the boundary with Johnstown townland intersects the NE half of the site and has levelled it on this side. All that remains now is a substantial earthen bank (Wth 1.5m) visible on the S side of the road which curves from S-W with a wide shallow external fosse.
