- WM007-097 Chapel
Description
Situated on rising ground in an area of good pasture-land on the boundary between Gartlandstown and Ranahinch. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as ‘Chapel-in ruins’ standing inside a rectangular shaped enclosure. Present remains consist of a much overgrown site covered with trees and bushes. Only the grass covered wall footings survive of the chapel (dims. 17m NW-SE; 7m NE-SW) dedicated to St. Eoin (The Schools’ Collection, Vol. 0719, p. 613), standing in N quadrant of a rectangular shaped enclosure (approx. dims. 30m NW-SE; 25m NE-SW) defined by a poorly preserved earthen bank and external fosse. No traces of headstones or burial markers inside this enclosure. Possible penal chapel of 17th or 18th century date. According to local folklore the church known as 'St. Eoin's Chapel' was believed to be three hundred years old and that 'it was built at the time the Catholic people of Ireland were being persecuted for the faith. - WM012-011 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated on a low rise in gently undulating grassland with good views of the surrounding countryside. Earthwork (WM012-007----) 100m to SW. Depicted on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map as a sub-rectilinear shaped enclosure in the SE corner of a field, annotated ‘fort’ with a gravel pit in the SW quadrant. On this map the enclosing bank was depicted as upstanding from SW-W-N-NNE, elsewhere it was intersected by a field boundary from NE-E-S-SW. This site has been almost completely levelled. Originally it consisted of a slightly raised circular-shaped area (approx. diam. 36m N-S) enclosed by an earth and stone bank from SW-W-N-NE, and a shallow external fosse. The bank has been modified to form a field fence, and elsewhere it has been reduced to a scarp. The interior slopes slightly from NW-SE. Description
Situated on a slight natural rise. Annotated as a ‘fort’ on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map, and depicted as a small circular shaped earthwork/enclosure (approx. diam. 12m) on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. No surface remains visible of levelled monument. Small size of enclosure might suggest that this was a possible ring-barrow rather than a ringfort. Situated in pasture-land on E facing slope of rising ground with good views from N-E-SE, overlooked by a hill to W. Ringfort (WM007-095----) 37m to S. A slightly raised oval shaped area (approx. diam. 21m NW-SE), enclosed by a well preserved earth and stone bank (max. H 1m) and wide deep external fosse (max. D 2m). Causewayed entrance gap at E. Description
Situated on E facing slope of rising ground with good views from N-E-SE, overlooked by hill to W. Grass-covered wall footings of a sub-circular shaped hut site (approx. dims. 6m NE-SW; 4m NW-SE) are visible in centre of ringfort (WM007-094----). Description
Situated in pasture-land on NE facing slope of prominent hill with good views from N-E-SE, overlooked by a hill to W. Ringfort (WM007-094----) 37m to N. A sub-circular shaped area (approx. dims. 31m NE-SW; 29m NW-SE) enclosed by a well preserved earthen bank, a narrow shallow fosse and traces of an outer bank only visible from ENE-E-S. The interior slopes from W-E and has traces of cultivation ridges which run E-W. The monument has been disturbed by digging along its perimeter from NNE-N-NNW. A modern fence bisects the site from WNW-ESE, appears to have been built sometime in the last few years and is visible on Digital Glober aerial photograph taken November 2011.
