Description
Situated on a rise, in pasture. A ringfort (WM030-063----) lies c. 90m to S. Depicted on the revised 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map as a roughly trapezoidal-shaped earthwork. Monument described in 1964 as a relatively small D-shaped area enclosed by a low bank of earth and stone. Levelled monument described in 1973 as a faint traces of a levelled scarp which is best preserved along the W side. Levelled monument is visible today as a faint roughly D-shaped cropmark on Digital Globe aerial photography. Compiled by Alison McQueen, Vera Rahilly and Caimin O’Brien. - WM030-063 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated on a rise, in pasture. A ringfort (WM030-062----) lies c. 90m to N. Annotated ‘Fort’ on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map and depicted as a circular-shaped tree-lined enclosure. Depicted on the revised 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map as a roughly oval-shaped earthwork. Monument described in 1964 as a low platform earthwork (max. H 6’-8’ / 1.8-2.4m) defined by a scarp and faint traces of an external fosse (OPW Field Report 05/05/1964). Interior is inaccessible. Levelled monument described in 1973 as a roughly oval-shaped area (diam. 40m) defined by a pale green band of differential growth of grass which presumably represents a backfilled fosse. Levelled monument is visible today as a faint roughly circular-shaped cropmark on Digital Globe aerial photography. Compiled by Alison McQueen, Vera Rahilly and Caimin O’Brien. - WM030-042 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated on a slight rise, in pasture, with commanding views of the surrounding landscape. Depicted on the revised 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map as a roughly circular-shaped earthwork. Monument described in 1973 as a roughly circular-shaped area (diam. 27m) enclosed by a scarp, an intervening fosse and an outer bank. The outer bank is present from SE-S-WNW and merges with a field wall at E. The interior of the earthwork is uneven whereby some stones project from the surface across the N portion and quarrying has disturbed the S portion. A depression runs inside the scarp from N-NE and then turns S towards the centre. Outline of levelled monument visible today as a earthwork on Digital Globe aerial photography. Description
Situated on SE-facing slope of a large ridge running E-W, in pasture, with extensive views to S and overlooked by higher ground to N. A ringfort (WM030-060----) lies c. 180m to W. Depicted on the revised 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map as a roughly oval-shaped earthwork. Monument described in 1973 as a roughly circular-shaped area (diam. 35m) defined by a bank and external fosse. The bank is of earth and stone and the fosse is shallow. The interior is relatively level and there is a stone-lined entrance at E. Levelled monument described in 1979 as no surface remains visible of ringfort. Levelled monument is visible today as a faint roughly oval-shaped cropmark on Digital Globe aerial photography.
