• WM030-043 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a low ridge running NW-SE, in pasture, with good views of the surrounding landscape. Ringfort (WM030-044----) lies c. 120m to SE. Depicted on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map as an irregular oval-shaped tree-planted enclosure annotated ‘fort’. Depicted on the revised 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map as a circular-shaped earthwork. Levelled monument described in 1973 as a circular-shaped area (diam. 33m) defined by a pale green cropmark of differential growth, which presumably represents a backfilled fosse. Levelled monument is visible today as a vague outline of a distorted circular-shaped cropmark on Digital Globe aerial photography. Compiled by Alison McQueen, Vera Rahilly and Caimin O’Brien.   Description

  Situated on a low ridge running NW-SE, in pasture, with good views of the surrounding landscape. Ringfort (WM030-043----) lies c. 120m to NW. Annotated ‘fort’ on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map and depicted as an oval-shaped tree-planted enclosure. Depicted on the revised 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map as a subrectangular-shaped earthwork. Levelled monument described in 1973 as no surface remains visible. Levelled monument is visible today as a vague outline of a subrectangular-shaped cropmark on Digital Globe aerial photography. • WM030-126 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  The remains of a roughly-circular earthwork which could be the remains of much degraded ringfort are visible on Bing Maps aerial photograph (pers. comm. C. McCormack). A possible ringfort (WM030-127----) is located in the adjoining field to the SE. This possible ringfort is not indicated on any edition of the OS 6-inch maps. A levelled post-medieval field boundary can be seen on the aerial photograph running NW-SE across the centre of the possible ringfort. A series of earthworks of unknown antiquity can be seen in the field immediately to the N. Cultivation ridges of post-medieval date can be seen on the aerial photograph in the field immediately to the S of the monument. The curvilinear field boundary visible on aerial photograph to the NNW represents the remains of a laneway that is depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. This laneway gave access to a an L-plan building possibly a farmhouse that is depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map and located a few metres to the W of the possible ringfort.   Description

  The remains of a roughly-circular earthwork which could be the remains of much degraded ringfort are visible on OSI 2005 aerial photograph (pers. comm. C. McCormack). The crop mark is located in the NW corner of a small rectangular field. A possible ringfort (WM030-126----) is located in the adjoining field to the NW. A series of earthworks of unknown antiquity can be seen in the field immediately to the N. Cultivation ridges of post-medieval date can be seen on the aerial photograph in the field immediately to the SW of the monument. The curvilinear field boundary visible on aerial photograph to the NW represents the remains of a laneway that is depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. This laneway gave access to a an L-plan building possibly a farmhouse that is depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map and located a few metres to the W of the possible ringfort.
