• WM026-017 Ringfort - unclassified
  Description

  Situated on top of a slight rise, in gently undulating pasture, with extensive views to N. Russellstown House 80m to W. Depicted on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map as a roughly circular-shaped earthwork annotated ‘fort’. Monument described in 1971 as a D-shaped area (dims. 28m E-W; 18m N-S) which appears to represent the N half of an originally circular-shaped monument. It is defined by a high steep scarp (H 1.8m) from W-N-NE, which has been partially removed from NE-E. A low, linear scarp defines the straight side to S, where the site has been truncated and the S half of the monument levelled. There is no trace of an external fosse or an outer bank. The site is planted with trees. Possibly a ringfort that was re-used as a tree-ring by the occupants of Russellstown House in the post-1700 period. • WM026-021 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on NE-facing slope, in gently undulating pasture, with good views to NE and E, landscaped tree-ring 120m to SSE . Monument described as a subcircular-shaped area (diam. 42.5m NE-SW; 35m NW-SE) enclosed by a low earth and stone bank. There is no visible trace of an external fosse. The bank is best preserved from ESE-S-SW and is almost completely reduced to a scarp from SW-W-N-E-ESE. There is a very wide gap at SW, although a gap (Wth at top 6.7m; basal Wth 2.4m) at E seems to be the most likely as the original entrance. The interior has a gentle ENE-facing slope with faint traces of cultivation ridges running ENE-WSW. A small mound with steep sides is located in the NE quadrant and is either a modern feature or a grass covered rock. See attached profile surveyed and drawn by the ASI. • WM026-022 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a low rise, in relatively low lying pasture, on the SW edge of a bog, with extensive views to ESE. Depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as a circular-shaped earthwork. Monument described in 1971 as an oval-shaped area (dims. 57.5m NW-SE; 40m NE-SW) defined by a low earthen scarp which is disturbed at WSW. There is no visible trace of an external fosse. The original entrance is not visible. A modern drain which formed part of a modern field boundary extends outside the scarp from S-W-WNW. The interior rises gently from the perimeter towards the centre and a broad strip running NW-SE has recently been ploughed. In the NE quadrant is a long depression (L 12.6m; Wth 1.6m; D 1.05m) running NNW-SSE with an expansion (Wth 3.9m) at the NW end and an expansion (Wth 2.4m) at the SE end. The outline of the depression shows signs of disturbance. This monument has been modified as a tree plantation. • Russellstown House, country house, 1850–1880 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached three-bay two-storey country house, built c.1870, with a single-bay single-storey flat-roofed entrance porch to the centre of the main elevation (west), a full-height canted bay projection to the north elevation and a two-storey return to the rear (east). Hipped natural slate roof with a projecting eaves cornice, decorative clay ridge tiles and a pair of central chimneystacks having moulded rendered string courses and cornicing. Ruled-and-line rendered walls over projecting plinth with extensive rendered/stucco decoration, including raised quoins to the corners and a moulded string course at first floor window lintel level having applied render/stucco garland decoration over. Square-headed window openings with cut stone sills and one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows. Rendered surrounds with entablatures over (having garland motifs to friezes) to ground floor windows openings and rendered architraves to first floor window openings with entablatures over (forming part of eaves cornice). Smooth rendered finish to porch over plinth to base with corner pilasters and a cornice over with garlands to frieze. Pair of round-headed window openings with architraved surrounds and timber casement windows to front face of porch (west). Round-headed doorcase to north face of porch with architraved surround, double-leaf timber panelled door and a plain overlight. Set back from road in extensive mature grounds to the southeast of Mullingar. Complex of outbuildings to the north (15402649) and main entrance gate and a ruinous gate lodge (15402647) to the west. Single-storey rubble limestone outbuilding to the rear (north).
