• WM026-029 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a slight rise in gently undulating pasture. Monument described in 1971 as a subcircular-shaped area (dims. 39.5m N-S; 36m E-W) enclosed by a bank and external fosse. The bank is high and steep and is best preserved from NE-ENE-E and is mostly reduced to a scarp elsewhere. Large portions of the bank and scarp have been removed at NE, E and S. The fosse is wide and deep and is best preserved from NE-E-S, being much narrower and almost completely infilled elsewhere. The original entrance is not recognisable. There is a very narrow causeway extending diagonally across the fosse at WNW and there is a slight disturbance gap in the bank at this point which may be the source of the material. The interior has a slight NNW-facing slope with several subtle humps and hollows, possibly due to relatively modern disturbance. A large, irregular yet prominent hump in the SE quadrant could be a natural feature. There is a very slight short bank (L 5m; Wth 1.1m; H 0.25m) running ESE-WNW from the SW end of the hump, which is of unknown significance. • WM026-032 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a low rise of ground on wet marshy land in area now planted with coniferous trees. Depicted as an oval-shaped enclosure on the 1838 ed. OS 6-inch map but as a rectangular shaped earthwork on the 1911 ed. OS 25-inch map. The shape of the monument appears to have been modified when a post-1700 field boundary running NE-SW was constructed on the S side of the monument. This field boundary now forms the enclosing element of the monument on the SW side. Present remains consist of a sub-rectangular shaped area (diam. 37m NW-SE x 30m NE-SW) enclosed by poorly preserved remains of a low bank and external fosse, no clear entrance feature visible. The grass-covered wall footings of two hut sites (WM026-032001-/002-) are visible in the centre of the ringfort. See attached plan and profile of monument surveyed and drawn by the ASI. • WM026-033 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on top of a prominent hillock, in gently undulating pasture, with good views in all directions. Monument described in 1971 as an oval-shaped area (dims. 37.4m E-W; 35m N-S) enclosed by a bank with entrance gap (Wth at top 5m; basal Wth 1.8m) at E defined either side by a stone set on edge. The bank is steep on the exterior and is best preserved from ENE-E-SE and is reduced to a scarp elsewhere which has possible traces of an external stone facing. Large portions of the bank and scarp have been dug away at SSE, SSW and NNW. There is no visible trace of an external fosse. The interior rises slightly from the perimeter towards the centre. The perimeter and portions of the interior have been quarried at SSE and SSW. A shallow subcircular-shaped hole with upcast defining its upper edge is visible towards the centre and also seems to be a result of quarrying. • WM026-035 Building
  Description

  Situated at S end of low hillock overlooking Kilronan chapel (WM026-037001-) and graveyard (WM026-037003-) 225m to E. Standing Stone (WM026-036----) 125m to N, ringfort (WM026-038----) 320m to NNE, second ringfort (WM026-039----) 380m to ENE. Building stood in field approximately 3m E of the field fence running N-S that is shown on the 1911 ed. OS 25-inch map. No surface remains visible of 'Ruins' depicted in this field on Larkin's 1808 map of Co. Westmeath. This site was mistakenly identified as the site of 'Catherinestown Castle' (WM026-124----) and listed in the Westmeath RMP as a 'Castle site of'. The medieval castle of Catherinestown was located in the N quadrant of the townland close to the boundary with Burnellstown and Ardillon. The ruins of a building depicted in this field on Larkin's 1808 map of Westmeath could have been the remains of a pre-1700 house. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 22 January 2018

  Description

  Situated on top of a prominent hill (OD 457) with good views in all directions. Ringfort (WM026-038----) 190m to ENE, ringfort (WM026-039----) 320m to ESE, Kilronan church (WM026-037001-) and graveyard (WM026-037003-) 210m to SSE, and building (WM026-035----) 130m to S. A large irregular shaped upright conglomerate (H 2.2m; Wth 1.5m x T 0.7m) roughly rectangular in cross-section. The stone narrows slightly in width towards the middle and widens out again at the top.   Description

  Situated on low rise of ground with good views in all directions with modern graveyard extension immediately to S. Site of building (WM026-035----) in field 220m to W, standing stone (WM026-036----) known locally as the 'Cloghstuckagh' 235m to NW, ringfort (WM026-038----) 185m to N, ringfort (WM026-039----) 130m to NNE and third ringfort (WM026-073----) 280m to SSE. In 1837 Thomas O'Conor of the Ordnance Survey recorded that in Catherinestown 'there are small remains of the walls of an old church in ruins' (OSL 14/G/14/5(11), vol. 2, 47). No church or graveyard is depicted on the 1657 Down Survey parish map of Lynn (NLI, MS 723-4). In 1867 Cogan (1867, 453) wrote that 'the old chapels of Marlonstown, Kenny, Kilronan, and Hopestown were pulled down. They are now graveyards'. Kilronan Church depicted on 1837 ed. OS 6-inch where it is shown standing in SE quadrant of Kilronan graveyard (WM036-037003-). On this map the S and E walls of the church formed the enclosing element of the graveyard. On the revised 1876 ed. OS 6-inch map the church building is depicted as 'Church Site of'. Church building possibly levelled between 1837 and 1876 editions of the OS maps. Low wall footings enclose a sunken area marks site of levelled church or chapel (approx. dims. 15m E-W x 6m N-S) in SE quadrant of graveyard. The outermost enclosing element and its narrow well preserved external fosse probably dates from the 19th century and is contemporaneous with the entrance gate and stone stile located at SW.   Description

  Situated on N facing slope of low hillock with good views in all directions. Ringfort (WM026-039----) 150m to SSE, Kilronan church (WM026-037001-) and graveyard (WM026-037001-) 180m to S, building (WM026-035----) 290m to SSW and standing stone (WM026-036----)180m to SW. Slightly raised circular-shaped area (diam. 31m NE-SW x 29m SE-NW) enclosed by a substantial earth and stone bank and a deep, wide flat-bottomed fosse with no clear entrance feature visible. The external face of the bank is intersected at W by a post-1700 field fence running N-S as depicted on the 1838 ed. OS 6-inch map. No evidence for external fosse at W due to intersection of post-1700 field boundary. A gap (Wth 4m) at W now closed by later field boundary may be remains of original entrance feature although this is not certain. The monument is now covered in scrub and vegetation making detailed examination difficult. See attached profile of monument surveyed and drawn by the ASI.   Description

  Situated on low hillock with good views in all directions. Ringfort (WM026-038----) 160m to NNW, Kilronan church (WM026-037001-) and graveyard (WM026-037001-) 140m to SSW, building (WM026-035----) 380m to W and standing stone (WM026-036----) 320m to WNW. Large slightly raised circular-shaped area (diam. 43.5m N-S x 47m SE-NW) enclosed by a low earth and stone bank, fosse and traces of a poorly preserved external bank visible at NW and SSE only. A wide gap (Wth 6.2m) at E now blocked by modern field fence may represent the original entrance feature. The inner bank is best preserved from SE-E-W, elsewhere it has been reduced to a scarp. The bank has several modern gaps due to agricultural activity. A portion of the bank and scarp have been dug away from N-NE, at NE and SW. The enclosing elements of the ringfort have been levelled at E by a post-1900 field fence running N-S. This field boundary is not depicted on the 1838 ed. OS 6-inch map or on the revised 1911 ed. • WM026-124 Castle - tower house
  Description

  ‘Catherinstowne’ Castle depicted as a rectangular type tower house standing on a low rise of ground on the 1657 Down Survey map of Fartullagh barony. On this map the castle is depicted standing in the N quadrant of the townland a short distance south of the southern boundary of the townland of Rahardelin [Ardillon] where the townland boundary forms a U-shaped bend close to a ringfort (WM026-033----) (NLI, MS 723-4). The terrier of the 1657 Down Survey parish map of Lynn recorded that ‘upon Catherinstowne stands a Castle’. In 1641 this castle stood on lands belonging to Thomas Tirrell who is listed in the Down Survey as an ‘Irish Papist’. A group of buildings depicted on the 1838 ed. OS 6-inch map to the N of a ringfort (WM026-033----) could be the site of the castle. Medieval castle site incorrectly listed in the Westmeath RMP as WM026-035----. The R. C. Church at Gainestown which contains Lynn Font (WM026-106---) was reputedly built with stones taken from Catherinestown Castle in 1853. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 23 January 2018
