Recorded monuments

• WM026-011 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a slight rise, in gently undulating pasture, with extensive views to NW. Ringforts (WM026-012---/-013----) lie. c. 157m to NE and 188m to E, respectively. Monument described in 1971 as a much disturbed oval-shaped area (dims. 43m E-W; approx. 32m N-S) enclosed by a bank and external fosse. A gap and causeway at WSW appear modern as does a wide gap and a ramp at ENE. The bank is high and steep and is survives from WSW-W-WNW and ESE-SE-SSE. There are vague traces of a fosse from SW-W and from the ESE-SE. A slight bank with an outer fosse curves outside the monument from W-N-E leaving a wide intervening space between it and the inner fosse, although they are not concentric. A large portion of the bank has been removed at S and running N-S into the centre of the interior are two widely spaced parallel rows of timber sleepers which define sides of a silage pit. The surface of the interior has been scraped away between the timber rows. There are fragments of banks and scarps outside the monument however it is not possible to confirm if they are contemporary. • WM026-013 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a slight rise, in gently undulating pasture, with good views in most directions. Ringforts (WM026-012----/-011----) lie. c. 122m to NW and c. 188m to W, respectively. Monument described in 1971 as a much disturbed roughly circular-shaped area (diam. 29m) enclosed by a scarp. The perimeter has been dug away from NNW-N-NE and from ENE-E-SSE. There is no visible trace of an external fosse and the original entrance is not visible. The interior is very uneven, having several small humps which appear to be a grass covered stones. A low scarp (H 0.5m) extends (L 11m) from the perimeter at S into the interior. It has a very slight depression (Wth 1.2m; D 0.2m) along its E side. Remains of a wide fosse and external bank at SW are visible today on Digital Globe aerial photographs. Cultivation ridges with a possible house site are visible immediately SW of the ringfort on Digital Globe aerial images. See attached profile of monument surveyed and drawn by the ASI. • WM026-025001 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a prominent ridge, in pasture. The N52 road lies c. 70m to E. Monument described in 1971 as a circular-shaped area (diam. 30.5m) enclosed by a bank, an intervening fosse and an outer bank. The inner earth and stone bank is high and steep on the exterior and is almost reduced to a scarp. There is a wide fosse and the fragmentary remains of an outer bank. The original entrance is not visible. The interior rises slightly from the perimeter towards the centre and a house site is in the S quadrant. A house site (WM026-025003-) is within the S quadrant and a field system and a complex of house sites (WM026-025002-) are to the immediate SSW, outside the ringfort. • WM026-025002 Field system
  Description

  Situated on a prominent ridge, in pasture. The N52 road lies c. 70m to E. Immediately S and SW of ringfort (WM026-025001-) are a complex of field banks with associated hut sites. There are two rectangular-shaped house sites, three possible house sites and a number of banks running E-W. A portion of a field bank which seems to be part of this complex, has been built up against the exterior of the outer ringfort bank from NW-N-E-S, which would suggest that these external features area later in date. • WM026-025003 Hut site
  Description

  Situated on a prominent ridge, in pasture. The N52 road lies c. 70m to E. In the S quadrant of ringfort (WM026-025001-) are the remains of a large rectangular house site (long-axis NE-SW) defined by a slight bank of earth and stone. • WM026-026 Barrow - ring-barrow
  Description

  Situated on top of a small, yet prominent rise, in gently undulating pasture. Monument described as a low barely visible egg-shaped mound (dims. 6.3m; 5.2m; max. H 1.2m) enclosed by an inner fosse, an inner bank, an intervening fosse and an outer bank. The inner fosse is very slight and almost imperceptible. The two earthen banks are slight with a wide shallow fosse between them. The inner bank rises very marginally above the slight inner fosse. Approximately five stones form part of an internal stone facing of the outer bank at SE. The banks and fosses are best preserved from NE-E-S-W-NW, however the intervening fosse and outer bank are defaced at N. Some small sod-covered stones are visible on the surface of the mound but they could have been deposited here in relatively recent times. There is no visible trace of a formal entrance. • WM026-028 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a small rise, in gently undulating pasture. Monument described in 1971 as an oval-shaped area (dims. 51m NE-SW; 47.5m NW-SE) enclosed by an inner bank, an intervening fosse, an outer bank and an outer fosse. The inner bank is high and steep on the exterior and is best preserved from SE-S-SW and is almost reduced to a scarp elsewhere. The intervening fosse is wide and deep. The outer bank of earth and stone is substantial. The outer face has been modified in relatively modern times and a post and wire fence has been erected along its upper edge. There are remains of a wide outer fosse from NNE-NE-ENE and from SSW-SW-WSW. There are corresponding gaps in the inner and outer banks and a causeway at S and also the same at NNW. Both of the outer gaps have a modern gateway. Modern fences intersect the outer bank at ESE, WSW and N. The interior has a gentle WSW-facing slope and there is a sunken trackway leading from the inner gap at NNW towards the centre. A large concrete-lined silage pit has been cut into the perimeter at E and occupies part of the E quadrant. There is a large rectangular patch of concrete on the surface at the W end. • Clonmoyle House, house, 1840–1860 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached three-bay two-storey over basement, house, built c.1850, on an L-shaped plan. Hipped natural slate roof with overhanging eaves and a central pair of rendered chimneystacks. Pebbledashed walls over smooth rendered plinth with rasied rendered quoins to the corners. Ruled-and-line rendered walls to the east side elevation. Square-headed window openings with cut stone sills, rendered shouldered architraves and six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows. False window openings to east and west side elevations. Central elliptical-headed doorway having timber door surround (with half fluted Composite columns supporting timber lintel with wreaths and cornicing), early panelled timber door and a segmental-headed fanlight over. Two limestone steps to front (south). Complex of single and two-storey outbuildings to the rear (northeast), built c.1800, having hipped or pitched natural slate roofs (cut stone verges to pitched roofs), roughcast rendered rubble limestone walls and square-headed window and door openings. Remains of walled garden to east. Main entrance to the west, comprising two pairs of dressed limestone gate piers, on square plan, linked by a rendered wall, on quadrant plan, to either side (north and south). Rubble limestone boundary wall runs away to the north and south with remains of former entrance to Clonmoyle House to the north. Located to the southeast of Mullingar.

• House, 1800–1830 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c.1815, with lean-to extensions to gable ends (north and south). Pitched artificial slate roof with cast-iron rainwater goods and with ruled-and-line rendered chimneystacks to either gable end. Ruled-and-line rendered walls with square-headed openings having cut stone sills and replacement windows. Central round-headed doorway to main elevation (east) having replacement timber door set in cut limestone block-and-start surround with a painted Gothic-style fanlight over. Set back from road in own grounds to the southeast of Mullingar having a complex of single-storey whitewashed rubble limestone outbuildings to the north with pitched slate roofs and square-headed openings, built c.1875. Entrance gates to the east, comprising a pair of rendered gate piers supporting wrought-iron gates.
