• WM024-086 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on top of a slight rise, in gently undulating pasture. Monument described in 1971 as a subcircular-shaped area (dims. 27.5m N-S) enclosed by a bank and external fosse. The bank is substantial and is approximately twice as high on the outside as it is on the inside. A wide, deep fosse is visible from SW-W-N-E and is very slight from NNE-E. The outer face of the fosse appears to have been steepened in modern times from SW-W-N-NNE, where it has a modern fence along its upper edge. The ground outside the monument has been disturbed from E-S-SW owing to a dwelling and associated haggard abutting from NNE-SW. There is a large disturbance gap in the bank at N. A large gap (Wth at top 6m; basal Wth 2.2m) in the bank at E may represent an entrance. There is no definite trace of a causeway at E, however the ground has been disturbed where the gable-end of the house abuts the monument. The interior is quite uneven with rises and hollows. • WM024-090 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a slight rise, in gently undulating pasture, with good views in all directions. Ringforts (WM024-093----/WM024-091----) lie c. 140m to NW and c. 150m to SE, respectively. Taghnafearagh House lies immediately to NW. Monument described in 1971 as a subcircular-shaped area (dims. 32.5m N-S; 27m E-W) enclosed by a bank and slight external fosse with a gap (Wth at top 4.3m; basal Wth 1.2m) at NNW which may represent the entrance. The bank is low on the interior where some large stones represent the remains of an internal stone facing. The bank is high and steep on the exterior and it incorporates some rock outcrop at SSE. It is slightly defaced and with livestock gaps in several places. The slight fosse is best defined at N. The interior rises slightly from the perimeter towards the centre; there is some rock outcrop within. Compiled by Alison McQueen, Vera Rahilly and Caimin O’Brien. Date of upload: 21 August 2019

  Description

  Situated on a slight rise, in gently undulating pasture, with good views in all directions. Ringfort (WM024-090----) lies c. 150m to NW. Monument described in 1971 as a small circular-shaped area (dims. 26.7m N-S; 25.8m E-W) enclosed by a well preserved earthen bank and slight remains of an external fosse visible from SSW-W-N-SE. No entrance feature visible. A modern roadside wall which forms the townland boundary with Mosstown extends outside the bank from SE-S-SSW.   Description

  Situated on a slight rise, in gently undulating pasture, with good views in all directions. Annotated ‘Fort’ on the 1837 OS Fair Plan map where it is depicted as a small circular-shaped tree-lined enclosure outlined by two concentric lines. Depicted on the 1837 OS 6-inch map as a circular-shaped tree-planted earthwork (approx. diam. 34m). Monument described in 1971 as no surface remains visible. • WM024-093 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on a slight rise, in gently undulating pasture, with good views in all directions. Monument described in 1971 as an oval-shaped tree-planted area (dims. 30.3m N-S; 24.3m E-W) enclosed by a bank, with intervening fosse and an external bank with a gap (Wth at top 6.3m; basal Wth 2.3m) in the inner bank and a gap (Wth at top 7.6m; basal Wth 5m) in the outer bank at N which may represent the entrance. The inner bank is steep and is almost reduced to a scarp, large portions have been dug away at SE and WNW. There are the remains of a slight fosse and of an external earthen bank. A modern roadside wall which forms the townland boundary with Taghnafearagh skirts the bank from SSE-S-SW, where the fosse and outer bank are not visible. The interior has a gentle NNE-facing slope.
