• WM003-096 Church
  Description

  Located 190m N of the market square in the village of Castlepollard. In NW quadrant of graveyard (WM003-096001-). Castlepollard was in medieval period known as Rathyoung as depicted on the 1659 Down Survey map of Rathgraff parish (NLI, MS 723-4 ). The castle of Rathyoung built by Nicholas Pollard became known as Castlepollard (Woods 1907, 282). According to Cogan (1862-7 vol. 2, 400) the church at Killafree may have formed part of a monastery. The Union of Rathgraffe took place in 1676 and involved the merging of Rathgraffe, Lickbla, Faughalstown, Mayne, Foyran, St. Mary’s and St Fechin’s of Fore and Kilpatrick (Healy 1908, vol. 2, 317). A datestone (WM003-096004-) inserted into the S wall of the church records that this building was constructed by Walter Pollard of Castlepollard in 1679. It is not clear if the present church dates solely from 1679 or whether it was rebuilt at this time incorporating fabric of the medieval church of Killafree. In 1820 it was recorded that the church in Castlepollard ‘being too small for the congregation, and a very old fabric, a new church is building, on a new site, in the town of Castlepollard’ (Anon. 1820, 87). Present remains consists of the ruins of a church comprising of a rectangular nave with semi-circular shaped apse at E end and four storey high defensive ivy-covered tower at W end. The quality of the masonry is poor and the walls of the church are built with uncoursed rubble with rough undressed quoins. A cut stone round-arched doorway located in the S wall of the W tower gives access to the ground floor. The church was entered from this tower through a doorway located in centre of W gable of church. Located off centre to W in S wall are the remains of a round-arched window now covered with a grill. The voussoirs of this arch are 18th / 19th century in appearance. To the W of this window opening there is a datestone (WM003-096004-) inserted into the external face of the church wall. A transept chapel located on the centre of the S wall of the church has a subterranean burial vault of the Pollard family beneath this chapel. A datestone (WM003-096003-) located above the hoodmoulding of a destroyed window in the centre of the S gable of this transept dates from 1679. The ivy clad structure rising from the apex of the S gable of the transsept probably represents the remains of a belfry. Stone steps on the external face of the S gable of this chapel lead down to the burial vault. A large graveslab (WM003-096002-) blocks the entrance to this subterranean burial vault. A cut stone pointed doorway with fine punch-dressed chamfered jambs now covered with a metal grill located in the W wall of the transept gave access to this chapel. A transept arch connecting the chapel to the main body of the church is now blocked up. This blocking may date from 1679. There is no evidence of any window opening in the E wall of this transept. A blocked up round-headed window can be seen immediately N of transept in S wall of church. This round-arched window now blocked up appears to be 18th century in date. The E face of the apse has been refaced with evidence of brick used in refacing of wall which is badly damaged with a metal grill now covering the broken out E window. Two similar blocked up window openings dating from the 18th / 19th century can be seen in the N wall of the church. The round arched opening located off centre to W in N wall of church cuts across an earlier flat headed arch visible in the external face of the N wall. The string course of a possible wall-walk of the W tower can be seen on NE angle where ivy has partially fallen off. The ground floor of the W tower is lit by flat headed slit opes in centre of N and W walls. All the floors in the tower appear to have been wooden carried in the thickness of the wall. The interior of the church and the tower are inaccessible. The internal walls of the tower are covered with a whitewash render with evidence of redbrick inclusions in patches of the wall. Church building described by the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage as following ; ‘Detached former Church of Ireland Church, built c.1670, consisting of a three-bay hall with attached four-stage tower on square-plan to the west end. Now a ruinous roofless shell. Constructed of rubble limestone, all detail is now obscured by heavy vegetation and ivy growth.   Description

  Located 145m N of the market square in the village of Castlepollard. Large rectangular shaped graveyard (95m N-S; 70m E-W) known locally as Killefree Graveyard with ruins of a medieval church (WM003-096---) in NW quadrant. The graveyard is enclosed by a post-medieval stone wall with entrance gate at SW and NW angles. Graveyard contains memorials mainly dating from the post-medieval period onwards.   Description

  A large 17th century graveslab blocks the entrance into the subterranean burial vault of Walter Pollard located beneath the S transept chapel of Castlepollard church (WM003-096---). Stone steps on the external face of the S wall of the transept leads down to the blocked entrance of the burial vault belonging to the Pollard family. The top of the graveslab bears the armorial shield of the Pollard family and inscription beneath reads ‘Walter Pollard of Castlepollard, Esquire. Erected this monument for the Interminge of Himselff and Elizabeth, his wife, the Only Daughter of Arthur Dillon in the County of Westmeath, Esquire. And Those of The said Walter’s Name and Family. Anodomini’ (Woods 1907, 282). Below the inscription at the base of the slab there is the motto Memento Mori with a skull and crossbones with the date 1679.   Inscribed 17th century date stone inserted into external face of S wall of Castlepollard church (WM003-096----) located off centre to W. The stone plaque is located high up in the S wall of the church, E of the S doorway into the tower at the W end of the church. The inscription on the plaque reads ‘AT CASTLEPOLLARD THIS UNION CHURCH OF THE UNITED PARRISHES OF MAYNE RATHGRAFF LICKBKLA FFOYRAN OUR LADYS ST FECHINS FFAGHALSTOWNE AND KILLPATRIK WAS BUILT BY THE CARE AND INDUSTERY OF WALTER POLLARD ESQUIRE ANO DOMINI 1679’. • WM007-010 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  The upstanding remains of the enclosing bank of the ringfort resembles closely the description of the monument from 1975. There are no remains visible of the shallow external fosse and the profile of the earthen bank has been changed by the recent landscaping works. Present remains consist of a portion of the enclosing bank (dims. chord. 37m; top Wth 5m; base Wth 10m; ext. H 1m; int. H 1.2m) which is upstanding from north to east only, the low barely visible remains of a degraded bank can be seen at SE inside the walled garden on S side of the public road. A short section of the northern end of this bank appears to have been removed during the landscaping works. The public road (Oldcastle Rd.) runs through the centre of the monument on an east-west axis, a slight rise in the road indicates the line of the levelled bank of the monument. On the southern side of the road there is a walled garden as shown on the Ordnance Survey 6-inch map. The low poorly preserved outline of the enclosing bank can be seen inside this walled garden. Immediately to the west of the walled garden are the remains of a bungalow. There are no visible remains of the enclosing bank on the plot of the modern bungalow to the south of the public road. The monument is not depicted as an antiquity on the 1837 edition of the Ordnance Survey 6-inch map where it is depicted as a curving field boundary on the northern side of the public road only. A possible dwelling house or building is depicted at the west end of the curving field boundary and a walled garden is depicted on the southern side of the road where the curving feature is running towards. The presence of the faint remains of the enclosing bank inside this walled garden suggests that the earthen bank predates the construction of the walled garden. On the Ordnance Survey 25-inch map the monument is depicted as a roughly circular enclosure bisected by the public road running on an east-west axis. A gap in the bank possibly the entrance gap into the monument is depicted at WNW. On this map, only the SE quadrant of the enclosing feature is depicted as missing where the bank runs across the walled garden feature. Today only a curving arc of the enclosing bank remains upstanding from N to E, on the S side of the public road a modern bungalow stands on the site of the enclosing bank. There are no visible remains of the enclosing bank from W to N as depicted on the OS 25-inch map. The public road running through the centre of the monument marks the townland boundary between Townparks and Kinturk Demesne. The monument was surveyed by Archaeological Survey of Ireland in 1975 when it was described as following; ‘This earthwork has been partly destroyed. The roadway runs through the centre of the ringfort in an east west direction. On the NE side the earthwork is bounded by a substantial bank of earth & stone approx. 1.5m high. On north & NW the bank is almost completely destroyed. A small segment of bank exists on the western side. Outside the bank there is a shallow fosse. The perimeter of the earthwork is marked on the south side by an irregular embankment. A new house has been built on this part of the ringfort. The diam. of the interior east-west is approx. 45m. The interior of the northern half of the ringfort interior is rather uneven. This ringfort is built on fairly well drained pasture land with moderate views of the surrounding countryside’ (SMR File 21/04/1975). A second ASI report from 1975 described the monument as following; ‘Much disturbed. The site is divided in two by a modern WNE-ESE broad roadway. An unusually large ringfort. To the N of the road it is bounded by the remains of a substantial earthen bank. Remains of a wide shallow fosse outside it. From W-NW-N the bank has been partly removed and what is left of it has been transformed into a small modern bank. The S part of the site is divided by a modern N-S wall, E of this the site of the SE quadrant is occupied by a relative modern house. The SW quadrant is for the most part occupied by a new house but the perimeter can be traced in the form of a low embankment. The original entrance way is not recognisable. A low circular flat topped mound inside the bank on the E looks modern. Sited on a slight W slope of a slight natural rise’ (SMR File 04/03/1975).   Detached Roman Catholic church on cruciform plan, dated 1859 and possibly containing the fabric of an earlier T-plan chapel to site, comprising a three-bay nave to the north, two-bay transepts to the east and the west, a shallow chancel to the rear (south) and with a two stage tower on square-plan attached to the entrance front (north) having a castellated parapet with corner pinnacles and an ashlar limestone spire on octagonal-plan over. Pitched natural slate roof with raised verges to gable ends. Rendered walls with cut-stone detailing and dressings. Lancet window openings to nave with cut stone Y-tracery and having broad stepped buttresses between bays. Tower to entrance front flanked by quatrefoil windows in circular cut limestone surrounds. Five-graded lancet windows with stained glass to chancel gable (south). Central pointed-arched doorway to entrance front (north) having a cut stone hoodmoulding over and with timber double-doors. Pointed-arch ‘Early-English’-style Gothic window with plate tracery above doorcase and having cusped-headed openings above to belfry with timber louvers. Interesting interior with Carrera marble altar goods, cross-braced timber roof structure, Victorian decorative encaustic tiles to the floor and carved Gothic-style ‘stations of the cross’ and memorial monuments. Galleries to rear of nave (with organ) and to both transepts, supported on plain Classical-style columns, having cast-iron open balustrades to gallery fronts. Set in extensive grounds with rendered plinth walls with cast-iron railings over and cast-iron gates to road-frontage to the north (Church Street). Presbytery to north (not in survey). Located to the east of The Square, Castlepollard.

  End-of-terrace four-bay two-storey townhouse with integral carriage arch, built c.1840. Pitched natural slate roof with clay ridge tiles, cast-iron rainwater goods and a brick chimneystack. Roughly coursed limestone rubble walls. Square-headed openings with two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows and cut-stone sills. Round-headed doorcase to centre with cut-stone voussoirs, replacement door and plain fanlight over. Segmental-headed opening to carriage arch with cut-stone voussoirs, timber door and iron fittings. Road-fronted with large garden to the rear.

  Corner-sited three-bay two-storey house, built c.1820 having two modern shopfronts. Hipped natural slate roof with three cement rendered chimneystacks and cast-iron rainwater goods. Smooth rendered walls to the ground floor and roughcast rendered finish above to first floor, c.1920. Square-headed window openings with replacement tripartite timber sliding sash windows to the first floor and timber casement windows to ground floor. Shopfront built into former carriage arch to east end of Church street façade, c.1920.   Description

  Detached former Church of Ireland Church, built c.1670, consisting of a three-bay hall with attached four-stage tower on square-plan to the west end. Now a ruinous roofless shell. Constructed of rubble limestone, all detail is now obscured by heavy vegetation and ivy growth. Pollard Family vault, c.1679, under nave with finely carved blocking stone having inscription. Set in extensive graveyard with variety of eighteenth and nineteenth century gravestones, some with elaborate cast-iron railings. Site is enclosed by a rubble limestone wall with simple wrought-iron gate with central cross to top. Located in slightly elevated position to the north of the village.

  Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c.1820. Pitched artificial slate roof with cast-iron rainwater goods and with a brick chimneystack to either gable end. Roughcast rendered finish to the walls. Square-headed window openings with two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows and cut one sills. Round-headed doorcase to the centre with original recessed panelled timber door with plain fanlight and with a rendered hoodmoulding over. Road fronted with evidence of recently demolished return to the rear (west).

  Corner-sited three-bay two-storey late-Georgian house, built c.1820, with a four-bay two-storey return to the northeast and a further single-storey outbuilding with integral carriage-arch to the east elevation. Pitched and hipped slate roof with rendered chimneystacks. Rendered walls with raised quoins to corners and smooth rendered plinth to base. Square-headed window openings with cut stone sills. Cast-iron guards to ground-floor windows to the north elevation. Central round-headed doorway having a timber panelled door and with inset Ionic columns supporting a moulded lintel/entablature and a petal fanlight over. Road-fronted with cast-iron railings on stone plinth wall to front (west). Extensive yard to rear entered through a segmental-headed carriage-arch to the north elevation having dressed stone voussoirs over.

  Semi-detached five-bay two-storey bank (south) and bank manager's residence (north), built c.1880, having a projecting single-bay flat-roofed entrance porch to the centre of the banking floor, a projecting single-storey canted-bay window to the north end of the main elevation and single-storey side extension to south end. Hipped natural slate roof hidden behind a raised parapet with moulded cornice/coping over. Rendered chimneystacks and cast-iron rainwater goods. Smooth rendered walls with extensive rendered/stucco detailing, including Doric pilasters, decorative garlands, a moulded cornice at ground floor level and moulded sill courses to the ground and first floor openings. Square-headed windows openings with one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows. Replacement windows to the banking floor, flanking central porch. Round-headed doorway to projecting porch having moulded surround, plain overlight and a replacement timber door. Square-headed entrance to the north end of the front façade, giving access to the bank manager’s residence, having a replacement timber door set in a glazed surround. Set slightly back from road with a rendered plinth wall decorative iron railings to the front. Located to the east side of The Square, Castlepollard.

  Semi-detached five-bay single-storey building, c.1850, having a traditional timber shopfront to the northwest end of the front facade. Now in use as offices. Pitched natural slate roof with cast-iron rainwater goods and a single rendered chimneystack to the centre. Raised rendered verge to the southeast gable end. Smooth rendered finish to the front façade (southwest) with roughcast rendered finish to the side elevation (southeast). Square-headed window openings to the southeast end having two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows. Square-headed doorways to the southeast end having early timber panelled doors with plan glass overlights. Timber shopfront to northwest end comprises a central square-headed doorway (with overlight) flanked to either side by square-headed triple-light display windows and with timber pilasters supporting timber fascia board above with moulded cornice over. Raised lettering to fascia and decorative console brackets to either end of fascia board. Road-fronted with rubble limestone wall to the southeast end and a yard with single-storey outbuildings to the rear (northeast). Located along the Dublin Road, to the southeast end of Castlepollard.

  Semi-detached three-bay two-storey dwelling, built c.1890, having a projecting flat-roofed single-bay single-storey porch to centre and gable-fronted bays to either end of the front façade (southwest). Converted for use as a Garda Station c.1930. Pitched natural slate roof with rendered chimneystacks and having decorative wrought-iron finials over the apexes of the advanced gables. Ruled-and-line rendered finish to the ground floor, pebbledashed to first floor separated by projecting moulded string course. Rendered quoins to the corners. Square-headed openings with six-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows. Single round-headed window to front face of projecting porch. Square-headed doorway having timber doors to either side of projecting porch. Set slightly back from road with a rendered boundary wall and wrought-iron gate to front. Located to the southeast end of Castlepollard.

  Semi-detached three-bay two-storey house on L-shaped plan, built c.1890, having a projecting single-bay flat-roofed entrance to the centre of the main façade (southeast) flanked to either side by single-storey flat-roofed canted bay windows. Now in use as offices. Shallow-hipped natural slate roof with overhanging bracketed eaves and a rendered chimneystack. Channelled finish to walls at ground floor level, smooth rendered above with raised rendered block quoins to corners. Square-headed openings with one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows and cut stone sills. Tripartite Wyatt-style windows to ground floor on southwest façade. Square-headed doorway to porch having a timber panelled door set in glazed surround. Main façade (southeast) facing onto garden and gravel carpark with side elevation (southwest) addressing the street. Rendered boundary wall to street frontage. Located to the southeast of the centre of Castlepollard.

  Corner-sited semi-detached three-bay two-storey house, built c.1820. Pitched natural slate roof with rendered chimneystacks at either gable end. Ivy-clad cement rendered walls over cut stone plinth. Square-headed openings with cut stone sills and replacement uPVC Wyatt-style windows. Central round-headed doorway having a cut limestone block-and-start doorcase, a timber panelled and with a spider's web fanlight over. Set slightly-back from road and bounded on street-frontage by low rubble stone wall with cut-stone coping and cast-iron railings over. Located to the southeast corner of The Square, adjacent to the Church of Ireland church (15302036).

  Detached Church of Ireland church, built c.1827, consisting of a three-bay hall with an attached three-stage tower on square-plan to the north having corner pinnacles, a castellated parapet and with an ashlar limestone spire on octagonal-plan over. Pitched natural slate roof, hidden behind castellated parapets, with clay-ridge tiles and cast-iron rainwater goods. Ruled-and-lined rendered finish to walls of front façade, roughcast rendered elsewhere. Pointed-arched window openings to nave with stained-glass windows. Tower to entrance front flanked by pointed-arched windows with timber Y-tracery. Three graded pointed-arched window openings to chancel gable (south), comprising a central window with intersecting timber tracery and stained glass windows flanked to either side by a pointed-arched opening with timber Y-tracery. Hoodmouldings over. Pointed-arched doorway to the front face of tower (north) having moulded ashlar limestone surrounds, timber double doors and with hoodmoulding over. Square-headed tripartite window to first floor of tower, clockface above to second stage and pointed-arched openings with louvred vents above to belfry. Interesting interior with variety of marble monuments and memorials, decorative plaster ceiling, heavy Victorian wooden pews, pulpit and lectern, high-Victorian stained-glass windows and a Bevington Organ (a gift from St. Keirin's Church, Loughcrew). There is a shallow gallery to the north supported on two slender columns. Gallery space is divided into three rooms with two box pews to centre section. Church is set back from road to the south side of The Square, Castlepollard, with cast-iron railings to front and graveyard to the rear.

  Detached three-bay two-storey Regency Revival-style bank building, built c.1878. Modern single-bay single-storey flat-roofed extension attached to the east end. Pitched natural slate roof with wide overhanging bracketed eaves, cast-iron rainwater goods and with moulded cut limestone chimneystacks to either gable end having terracotta pots over. Ruled-and-line rendered walls over chamfered cut stone plinth with rusticated cut limestone quoins to corners. Moulded sill course at first floor level having a plain frieze below with ‘Hand of Ulster’ motifs to either end. Square-headed window openings with moulded stucco surrounds having keystones over, cut limestone sills and replacement windows to first floor openings. Square-headed window openings at ground floor level having cut stone sills, moulded architraved surrounds and replacement windows. Central square-headed doorway having timber panelled double-doors, plain overlight and with a projecting doorcase having moulded pilasters with console brackets supported cornice over. Doorway reached up flight of cut stone steps flanked to either side by cast-iron railings. Set back from road in own grounds and bounded on road-frontage by a low ashlar limestone plinth wall having cast-iron railings over. Three pairs of gate piers on square-plan having moulded capstones and supporting cast-iron gates gives access to site from the north. Located to the south side of The Square, adjacent to the Church of Ireland church (15302036).

Square-headed window openings to the first floor with rendered architraves and having stucco entablatures above. Square-headed doorcases with timber panelled doors and having plain overlights over. Shopfront to public house to north has continuous moulded fascia, rendered Doric pilasters on square plan and fixed-pane glazing. Chemist shop has replacement timber shopfront c.1995. Street-fronted with extensive yard and remains of outbuildings to rear. Located to the northwest corner of The Square.

Renovated,c.1994, with single-storey extensions added to the rear (north). Pitched and hipped natural slate roofs with cast-iron rainwater goods and a roughcast rendered chimneystack. Constructed of coursed limestone rubble with raised brick quoins to corners. Segmental-headed window openings with stepped (raised) red brick surrounds and replacement windows. Square-headed doorway with stepped (raised) brick surrounds to modern porch to east, matching detail of original building. Set back from road in own grounds with concrete boundary wall with wrought-iron gate to the road-frontage (south). Located to the west of Castlepollard.

  Detached three-bay two-storey former market house and courthouse, built c.1815. Burned c.1921 and rebuilt c.1926 with a single-bay single-storey flat-roofed entrance porch added to the north elevation. Later in use as a town hall, fire station and library. Refurbished externally, c.1975. Shallow projecting square-headed carriage arch to the centre of the east-facing elevation, formerly giving access to fire station. Hipped natural slate roof with red clay ridge tiles, a single rendered chimneystack to the southeast corner and with a moulded eaves course. Smooth rendered finish to the north elevation having a moulded string course at first floor level (running around head of projecting porch) and with a date plaque on rectilinear-plan to the centre at first floor level having ‘Town Hall A.D. 1926’ in raised lettering. Channelled rendered pilasters to either end (east and west) of projecting porch. Pebbledashed rendered walls to the east, west and south elevations over smooth rendered plinth. Raised rendered block quoins to the corners. Square-headed window openings having one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows to the north façade and timber casement windows elsewhere. Round-headed doorcase to projecting porch having timber double-doors and a plain overlight above. Round-headed doorway to the south elevation at first floor level, formerly giving access to court room at first floor level, having a timber door and plain overlight. Partially cantilevered cut stone doorcase to the south elevation, flanked to either side by wrought-iron railings, gives access to court room door at first floor level. Tongue-and-groove timber panelling to walls of court room with a judge’s room to the north end. Located in a very prominent position to the west side of The Square, Castlepollard.
