  Description

  The 1655 Down Survey map of Fartullagh barony shows a tower house type castle standing in the townland of 'Tyrelstowne' (NLI, MS 723-4) which in 1640 belonged to Thomas Tyrell who was listed as an 'Irish Papist' (ibid.). This castle was situated along an important medieval routeway known as 'Bealach an Tirialaigh' [Route of the Tyrrells] which was often referred to as the 'Pass' and is known today as 'Tyrrellspass'. The Ordnance Survey Letters recorded in 1837 that 'it is said that the Pass from which Tyrrellspass was named, running from Dublin to Galway, gave name also to Passkilbride' (OSL Vol. 2, 52-3). In 1623 an inquisition into the estate of John Tyrell who died in 1607 was recorded as born in 'Pass' and possessed of the castle and lands of Brackland also known as Tirrellston [Tyrrellstown] and Kilmurry and Rathcollomkill [Rahincuill?] containing 270 acres of land (Cal. inq. post mortem, 16 Jac. 1). He was succeeded by his son and heir James Tyrrell who was 40 years of age at that time (ibid.). A 16th century book recorded the following tradition about the origins of the Tyrrell family of Co. Westmeath which stated that 'Old Tyrrells and new Tyrrells, a whole country full, in a county called Westmeath. The old Tyrrells came over at the first conquest of Ireland, and were of the kindred of Walter Tyrrell, that killed William Rufus. And the new were lineally descended from James Tyrrell that murdered Edward the Fifth and his brother (and they came over long sithence the first). Tyrrell is in Irish, Treeath, which signifieth, banished for murder or treason' (Calendar of the state papers relating to Ireland 1599, 505). The castle ruins were restored in the 1970s and now functions as the Tyrrellspass Castle restaurant. The medieval tower house was described by Salter (2004, 156) as following; 'Dendrochronological tests upon an oak floor beam over the lowest level of this tower built by the Tyrrel family suggested a construction date of 1410. During the 1980s it was restored from a derelict state by Laurence Ginnell, and on the south side are ogival-headed lancets then brought from the castle (WM031-086----) of Syonan, whilst three two-light windows came from the ruined church (WM038-017006-) at Kilbeggan. The SE end contains a tier of small rooms over the entrance and the spiral stair. There are five storeys, with a pointed vault over the second level, and there are double-stepped battlements and two circular bartizans. A modern wing is hidden away at the back. Adjoining the tower on the SE is a circular flanker of the former bawn (WM039-001001-).   Freestanding cast-iron vent pipe, erected c.1890, comprising of fluted pedestal with moulded detailing, cylindrical shaft over with banding at intervals and a saw-tooth profiled parapet. Located on a footpath to northeast of the centre of Tyrrellspass adjacent to main road.

  Freestanding cast-iron water pump, erected c.1890, with banded cylindrical neck, fluted cap with finial and 'cow's tail' handle. Located to the northeast end of Tyrrellspass and surrounded on three sides by a rubble limestone wall with some remaining flagstones to base.

  Detached five-bay two-storey house, built c.1830, with shopfront to east end, c.1900, and outbuildings to rear. Originally two separate structures, now amalgamated into one single property. Pitched artificial slate roof with rendered chimneystacks and remaining sections of cast-iron rainwater goods. Roughcast rendered walls over smooth rendered plinth with raised block quoins to corners at either end. Square-headed window openings with timber two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows to first floor openings and one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows to ground floor openings, cut stone sills and rendered reveals throughout. Central square-headed doorway with rendered reveals and glazed timber door. Traditional timber shopfront to east end with timber pilasters with consoles over supporting timber fascia board with raised lettering. Fixed pane timber windows to shopfront flanking central square-headed doorcase with overlight above. Rubble limestone outbuildings to rear (northwest). Road-fronted at northeast end of Tyrrellspass.

  Description

  Detached single-storey three-bay neoclassical-style former schoolhouse, built c.1823, with advanced pedimented bays to either end. Now in use as a private house. Hipped and pitched natural slate roofs with clay ridge tiles, two rendered chimneystacks to centre (behind roof ridge) and cast-iron rainwater goods. Ashlar limestone walls with ashlar detailing, exposed random rubble limestone walls to sides (east and west). Recessed round-headed arches to projecting end bays with inset round-headed windows having cut stone sills and timber casement windows. Central round-headed doorway set within round-headed recess, having battened timber door with spoke fanlight over. Raised ashlar limestone parapet over with central date stone reading 'The Gift of Jane Countess of Belvedere Aided by Parliamentary Grant 1823'. Wrought-iron gates to either end give access to rear (north). Set back from the road overlooking The Crescent in the centre of Tyrrellspass.

  Detached four-bay two-storey house, built c.1815. Hipped slate roof with two smooth rendered chimneystacks to centre and cast-iron rainwater goods. Roughcast rendered walls over smooth rendered plinth. Square-headed window openings with three-over-six pane timber sash windows to first floor openings and six-over-six pane timber sliding sash to ground floor. Cut stone sills and rendered reveals throughout. Round-headed doorway with cut stone block-and-start surround with projecting keystone over, timber panelled door and spoke fanlight. Wrought-iron gates to east side give access to rear. Located on the Crescent, in the centre of Tyrrellspass, flanked by St. Sinian's Church to west and the school house to the east. Road-fronted.

  Freestanding Church of Ireland church, built c.1810 and altered c.1828. Comprising three-bay nave with attached three-stage tower on square plan (to west end) with corner pinnacles with carved head detail, a battlemented parapet and a needle spire on octagonal plan. Single-bay side vestibules with battlemented parapets and corner pinnacles flank tower to northwest and southeast (entrance façade). Pitched natural slate roof with decorative stone eaves course, raised cut stone verges with fractables. Ruled-and-line rendered walls to nave with cut stone detailing, tower and side vestibules constructed of cut limestone. Diagonal buttresses to tower and vestibules. Pointed-arched openings to nave with paired cusped lights with reticulated tracery. Four-light window to chancel gable with perpendicular tracery. Square-headed triple-light windows to first stage of tower with hoodmoulding over. Pointed-arched openings to belfry with louvered vents and hoodmouldings. Pointed-arched opening to tower with moulded stone surrounds, decorative timber double-doors with large fanlight over with reticulated tracery. Simple Gothic interior with open truss timber roof, plastered walls with wainscoting and painted panels. Plaster rib vaulting to the ceiling of the entrance porch. Interesting collection of monuments associated with the Earls and Countesses of Belvedere to the Interior, including a life-size neoclassical monument to George Augustus Rochfort (Second Earl of Belvedere died 1814) by John Bacon the younger. Set back from road in own grounds with graveyard. Rubble limestone boundary wall with cast-iron double gates to street frontage. Church is prominently sited overlooking the Crescent, Tyrrellspass.

  Detached three-bay two-storey former orphanage matron's house on L-shaped plan, built c.1840, with projecting single-bay gable-fronted entrance porch to centre of front façade (southeast). Now in the ownership of Westmeath County Council and currently out of use. Pitched natural slate roof with roughcast rendered chimneystack and terracotta pots. Ornate timber bargeboards to gable-fronted section to east end and to projecting porch. Roughcast rendered walls over smooth rendered plinth course. Recessed smooth rendered horizontal panels/fascia to southeast and northwest facades at first floor level. Square-headed window openings with cut stone sills and metal lattice windows with timber mullions. Oculus window with leaded glass above porch to second floor. Square-headed doorcase to porch with plain cut stone surround, a battened timber door with square-headed overlight above with lattice glazing. Set back from road in own grounds with gates and boundary wall to east (15322032). Four detached single and two-storey alms houses/orphanage buildings of various styles and in various states of repair, arranged around a crescent, to the south. Now boarded-up and no longer in use.

  Gateway and boundary wall, erected c.1840, comprising a pair of gate piers on square-plan with flanking sections of rubble limestone boundary walling (on crescent/quadrant plan) to north and south. Gate piers constructed of cut limestone over projecting plinth with shallow pyramidal capping over. Flanking walls terminated with rubble limestone gate piers on square-plan. Located at north end of Tyrrellspass, forming the north entrance to the former Belvedere Orphan Institution.

Ashlar limestone front façade with ashlar limestone eaves pediment (over central three bays) with clock face and a cast-iron bellcote over. Roughcast rendered walls to end elevations (east and west). Square-headed window openings with six-over-three pane timber sash windows to first floor and six-over-six pane timber sash windows to ground floor openings. Central round-headed doorcase with moulded limestone surround with keystone, timber panelled door and replacement fanlight over. Flight of five limestone ashlar steps to front. Ashlar limestone gate piers on square plan with limestone capping over and cast-iron double gates to either end (northeast and southwest), giving access to rear.   Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c.1815. Later in use as a dispensary (c.1835-1915). Now in use as a private house. Hipped natural slate roof with projecting eaves course, cast-iron rainwater goods and two rendered chimneystacks to centre with ashlar coping over. Roughcast rendered walls over smooth rendered plinth with projecting quoins to corners. Square-headed window openings with cut stone sills and six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows to ground floor and three-over-six pane timber sash windows to first floor openings. Central round-headed doorcase with cut stone architraved surround with keystone over and a timber door with spoke fanlight over. Single cut stone step to front and wrought-iron gates to either end giving access to rear. Road-fronted overlooking The Crescent, Tyrrellspass.

  Detached five-bay two-storey hotel on L-shaped plan, built or rebuilt c.1815, with four-bay two-storey return to north. Modern two-storey extension to northwest. Pitched natural slate roof with clay ridge-tiles, rendered chimneystacks and cast-iron rainwater goods. Roughcast rendered walls over smooth rendered base with raised block quoins to corners. Square-headed window openings with cut stone sills and eight-over-eight pane timber sliding sash windows. Square-headed opening to east gable at first floor level with three round-headed one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows. Segmental-headed doorcase to east gable-end with timber panelled door, flanked by timber pilasters with consoles brackets supporting spider's web fanlight over. Road-fronted with principal elevation overlooking Main Street and east elevation overlooking The Crescent. Single-storey outbuilding with natural slate roof and roughcast rendered walls to north.

  Description

  Freestanding cast-iron water pump, erected c.1880, comprising banded cylindrical shaft with fluted head having fluted spout, ‘cow tail’ curvilinear handle, and fluted ogee-dome cap with finial over. Located in centre of The Crescent and surrounded by low limestone plinth wall with cast-iron railings over. Built on the site of an earlier 'draw well'.

• The Midway Motor Works, garage, 1940–1960 · Regional interest

  Detached five-bay single-storey former garage, built c.1950. Later in use as shop, now out of use. Flat and lean-to ashfelt roof behind raised parapet with central stepped pediment with star motif. Smooth rendered walls with recessed pebbledashed panels and raised rendered detailing. Smooth rendered fascia to parapet with raised rendered lettering reading ' The Midway Motor Works' and 'All Accessories Stocked'. Smooth rendered plinth to base. Square-headed window openings with concrete sill courses. Fixed three-pane timber framed windows to two western bays and fixed single-pane windows with timber casements over to two bays to east. Central square-headed carriage-arch with double timber sheeted doors. Road-fronted to the west of the centre of Tyrrellspass.

• Tyrrellspass Methodist Church, church/chapel, 1810–1820 · Regional interest
  Description

  Semi-detached two-bay single-storey former Methodist meeting house, built or rebuilt c.1814. Now out of use. Hipped natural slate roof with projecting eaves course and cast-iron rainwater goods. Roughcast rendered walls. Pointed-arched window openings with plain dressed limestone surrounds and sliding sash windows with intersecting tracery. Cut stone oval plaque to east elevation reads 'John Wesley preached here'. Set back from road behind single-storey garage (15322040) and currently inaccessible.
