• WX034-034 Ritual site - holy well
  Description

  Marked on the 1839 and 1924 eds of the OS 6-inch map and described in gothic lettering as Lady Well on both. It is located on a S-facing slope at the head of a slight W-E valley in the lower E-facing foothills of Slievecoiltia. It is not visible at ground level in pasture.   Description

  Marked faintly as a square structure (dims c. 7m N-S; c. 7m E-W) and described as 'site of Castle' on the 1839 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. It is situated in the valley of a small W-E stream in the lower E-facing foothills of Slievecoiltia. There are no historical references to a castle here. While Ballymarkley is mentioned in the description of the bounds of Whitechurch parish in the Civil Survey (1654-6), there is no mention of a castle or the ownership of the Ballymaclare land (Simington 1953, 183). No structure is visible at ground level in an overgrown area. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1996).   A granite bullaun stone (dims 0.5m x 0.4m; H 0.25m) with one basin (diam. 0.23m; D 0.12m) was recovered from Ballyclare church (WX034-036001-) together with a fragment of a late medieval window sill in a green stone, and they are both now kept at a house c. 300m to the W.   Description

  Marked faintly as a rectangular structure (dims. c. 12m E-W; c. 6m N-S) inside a faintly depicted graveyard (dims. c. 30m N-S; c. 30m E-W) and described as 'site of Chapel and Burial Gd.' in italic lettering on the 1839 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. It is situated in a shallow W-E valley in the E-facing foothills of Slievecoilte with a N-S stream c. 170m to the E. It is not visible at ground level in pasture but it is described locally as a cairn of material that was removed c. 1970 when a granite bullaun stone (dims 0.5m x 0.4m; H 0.25m) with one basin (diam. 0.23m; D 0.12m) and a fragment of a late medieval window sill in a green stone were recovered. Enclosure (WX034-037----) is c. 110m to the N. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1996).   Description

  Ballymaclare church (WX034-036001-) was inside the perimeter at N of a rectangular graveyard (dims. c. 30m N-S; c. 30m E-W) that is marked faintly on the 1839 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. It is situated in a shallow W-E valley in the E-facing foothills of Slievecoilte with a N-S stream c. 170m to the E. It is not visible at ground level in pasture but a granite bullaun stone (WX034-036003-) and a fragment of a late medieval window sill in a green stone were recovered c. 1970 and are kept at a house c. 300m to the W (WX034-035002-).   Description

  Marked as an oval embanked enclosure (ext. dims c. 60m NE-SW; c. 40m NW-SE) on the 1839 ed. of the OS 6-inch map and as two E-W banks inside NW-SE field banks at NE and SW on the 1924 ed. It is situated on a gentle E-facing slope at the E-facing foothills of Slievecoilte with a slight W-E valley just to the S and a N-S stream c. 170m to the E with the ground falling away to its flat-bottomed valley immediately to the E. This is a grass-covered trapezoidal area (dims. c. 55m NE-SW at W; c. 25m NE-SW at E) defined by grass-covered earthen banks (Wth 5.8-6m; int. H c. 0.5-0.8m; ext. H 1.4-1.6m) and outer flat-bottomed fosses (Wth of top 7.5-8m; Wth of base 4m; D c. 0.4m) only at N (L 44m) and S (L 35m). There is no evidence of a bank or fosse at the W side (L 54m) or the E side (L 25m). Ballymaclare church (WX034-036001-) and graveyard (WX034-036002-) are c. 110m to the S.   Description

  Situated at the E edge of a shelf overlooking a N-S valley (Wth of top c. 250m) with its stream c. 30m to the E. A polygonal cist (int. dims. 1.05m N-S; 0.95m E-W) defined by 6 or 7 side-stones (dims. c. 0.45-0.6m; H 0.4m; T 0.1-0.2m) is covered by a single roofstone (max. dims. 3.2m NW-SE; 1.3m NE-SW; T 0.1-0.25m) which has graffiti incised on it dating from 1932.   Description

  Freestanding single-oven single-stage lime kiln, extant 1840, on a circular plan. Now disused. Part creeper- or ivy-covered soldier coursed rubble stone walls with concrete or rendered coping to parapet. Single round-headed oven with limewashed voussoirs. Set in relandscaped grounds.
