• WX025-053 Moated site
  Description

  Situated at the base of a S-facing slope and with a W-E stream c. 50m to the S. Archaeological excavation (04E0326) in advance of roadworks on the Enniscorthy to New Ross road (N30) recorded almost an entire moated site as Coolamurry 7. It is a rectangular area (dims 35m E-W; 25m N-S) defined by wet moats (Wth 2-5m; max. D 2.2m) with a leat entering at the NW corner. It had internal banks partly preserved in field banks at E and S. Organic material and local pottery, including glazed wares, were recovered from the moats. The oak timbers of a wooden bridge that probably had an associated wooden gatehouse were found towards the W end of the N moat, at its widest point. Although unsuitable for dendrochronological dating the outer edges of one produced calibrated C14 dates of AD 1257-1386 (Eogan and Kelly 2016, 214-5). The interior was divided by a N-S channel with a metalled path leading from the bridge to the SW angle in the W part. • WX025-054001 Fulacht fia
  Description

  Situated on the N-facing slope of a low rise on a gentle S-facing slope. Archaeological excavation (04E0325) in advance of the N30 re-alignment at site 5a uncovered five troughs beneath a patchy deposit of burnt mound material. The troughs are subcircular (dims. 2.1m x 1.5m; D 0.4m to 3.7m x 2.16m; D 0.7m) but one is rectangular (dims. 2.4m NW-SE;1.6m NE-SW; D 0.56m) and steep-sided with traces of a stone lining at one end. • WX025-054002 Kiln
  Description

  Situated on the N-facing slope of a low rise on a gentle S-facing slope. Archaeological excavation (04E0325) in advance of the N30 re-alignment as site 5a uncovered a complex kiln. A number of flues at the N end led into the kiln (dims. 3.1m NW-SE; 1.5m E-W; D 0.4m) cut into deeply oxidized clay. There was a hearth nearby and the S bulbous end was sheltered by a slot trench c. 1.3m distant NE-S. A small cobbled area just to the W is also probably associated with it. • WX025-057 Metalworking site
  Description

  Archaeological excavation (04E0323) in advance of the N30 road re-alignment at site 7 uncovered three shallow pits (diam. c. 1m to 2.2m x 2.5m; max D 0.15m) filled with black organic clay and traces of slag. In addition there are layers (dims. c. 5m x c. 2m) with a large content of slag. A curvilinear ditch (L 4.4m; Wth 0.3-0.4m; max. D 0.15m) is associated with one of the pits.
