• WI035-014001 Church
  Description

  Situated in gently undulating terrain. Poorly preserved foundations of 'Whaley Abbey' (dims. c. 10.4m E-W; c. 7.7m N-S), a rectangular structure of uncoursed rubble. Reputed to be the site of the Abbey of Ballkine (Ronan 1927, 109). It is in the centre of a rectangular graveyard (dims. c. 50m E-W; c. 35m N-S) defined by a modern wall. Within the church is an early medieval graveslab (L 1.56m) with a full-length ringed openwork cross on the upper face. A second slab from the site with a ringed interlace cross and an inscription 'OROIT DO FACHTAIN' is now in the NMI (Braybrook 1879-81, 407). Several mid-18th and early 19th-century headstones also occur within the church. (Price 1946, 64). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wicklow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997).   A sub-rectangular slab (L. 1.56m; Wth 0.50-0.57m, T. 0.09-0.18m) with dressed upper face and sides and bevelled edges. The upper face has a full length ringed openwork cross. Located in Banaha ('Kilcommon') church (WI035-014001-). A second slab (WI035-014004-) with a ringed interlace cross and inscription (OROIT DO FACHTAIN) originated here also and is now in the NMI (Braybrook 1879-81, 407). • Whaleyabbey House, house, 1830–1850 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached eight-bay single-storey house, built c.1840. The house is finished in roughcast render. The panelled timber door has plain sidelights and a fanlight with small coloured panes; it is set within a flat-headed opening with a c.1880s Ionic doorcase with a small pediment. To the south side there is a c.1880s canted single-storey bay. Window openings are flat-headed with one over one timber sash frames. The hipped roof is finished with natural slate and cast-iron rainwater goods; it has overhanging bracketed eaves. The house is well set back within a large garden. To the west side there is a range of outbuildings.
