Description
This font came to the attention of the National Museum of Ireland in 1964. It was described as ‘an old stone font which was found near an old religeen in the townland of Balisland, near Shillelagh, Co. Wicklow’ which is ’14 ins. in width, 20 ins. in length and 7½ ins. in height, externally, and 11 ins. in width, 16 ins. in length and 5 ins. in depth, internally … rather round-shaped in the front on the outside and straight on each side, and the back seems to have been pulled away from a wall, …wide at top and rather round in bottom, with a hole at one side of bottom. It has no inscription or decoration on it, just plain stone’ (OPW file 1964). This record records the original location of the font at a burial ground (WI046-003----). Description
On a gentle SE-facing slope in improved pasture. The junction of the field and lane is very overgrown. This triangular-shaped area (dims. c. 25m NE-SW along roadside; c. 18m WNW-ESE along SW boundary; c. 20m NNW-SSE) is delineated by a road running NE-SW along the E side, a stream running NW-SE along the SW side and a curving boundary connecting the two, as depicted on the 2nd (1909) ed. 6-inch OS map and on the current OSI base map. A font (WI046-001----/WI046-001001-) came to the attention of the National Museum of Ireland in 1964. It was described as ‘an old stone font which was found near an old religeen in the townland of Balisland, near Shillelagh, Co. Wicklow’ (OPW file 1964). Description
Situated on a gentle SW-facing slope. Circular area (diam. 34m) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 2.3m; H 0.2-0.5m) and an external fosse (Wth 2.5m; D 0.3-0.6m). The entrance (Wth 3m) is at the NE. No indication of internal features. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wicklow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). - WI047-002 Graveyard
Description
Situated on a gentle S-facing slope. Rectangular enclosure (dims. 70m NW-SE; 45m NE-SW) defined by an earth and stone bank (Wth 3m; int. H lm; ext. H 1.3m) with external drystone facing. The entrance (Wth 2.4m) is towards the NE corner, between dressed granite pillars. The S end of the site is marked as a graveyard (dims. c. 35m NW-SE) on the 1838 OS 6-inch map, and contains small number of headstones dating from the mid-18th century onwards. Known locally as the 'Yew Tree Graveyard'. A broken granite font with a subrectangular basin, V-shaped in section and a drain-hole, lies within the graveyard. A bullaun stone (WI047-002002-) was discovered in 2012 by the Yewtree graveyard Restoration Committee. Description
A bullaun with a single hollow discovered in 2009 by the Yewtree Restoration Commitee amongst a group of stones from the boundary wall of the graveyard (WI047-002----).
