• WI019-017 Castle - ringwork
  Description

  Situated on a slight shelf with level ground all around. The remains of a ringwork, the NE corner of which is shown on the current OS 6-inch map (original diam. c. 55m). The interior is flat and is defined by the foundations of a stone wall, possibly the remains of a castle (WI019-017001-). The site is surrounded by a wide fosse (max. Wth 13m; D 2.8m) and an outer bank (max. Wth 14m; ext. H 2-2.5m; int. H 2m) best preserved N-E-S. At N the bank has external stone revetting and overlooks a berm and drain. A house and garden were built on the site in 1959 and the driveway enters at what was probably the original access, over a causeway (Wth c. 110m). (Price 1936, 47) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wicklow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). • WI019-017001 Castle - unclassified
  Description

  Situated within a ringwork (WI019-017----) on a slight shelf with level ground all around. The flat interior of the ringwork is defined by the foundations of a stone wall (Wth 1-1.5m) forming a polygonal shape. The wall only survives to a height of 0.5m except at N where two portions survive to c. 4m. One section has three putlog holes 1m from the ground. According to the Irish Tourist Authority (ITA) Survey of 1942 'on the lands of Ballyvolan House near the southern extremity of Ballyvolan Glen, are the scant remains of an ancient castle in which, it is said, James II found refuge on his flight from the Boyne. Numerous finds have been made near this site, including skeletons and burnt wood, and, in a nearby marl pit, a large horn containing Elizabethan coins - most of these discoveries were made over a century ago' (SMR File). • WI019-045 Bullaun stone
  Description

  Located to the ENE of Ballyvolan House, on a gentle SE facing slope of pasture land, formerly ploughed. It would appear from the landowner’s description that the stone was found upside down during ploughing within the area marked on the location map (SMR File). A sub-triangular shaped granite boulder (L 0.78m; Wth 0.6m) sloping in height from 0.48m at the highest point to 0.23m at the lowest end. The bullaun is located at the lower end and consists of a circular bowl-shaped depression (0.3m x 0.29m) ranging in depth from 0.22m to 0.1m. The underside of the stone is flat.
