Description
One of a number of hut sites situated on a marked S-facing slope below the stone rampart of the hillfort (WI027-018----) on Brusselstown Hill, within the larger Spinans Hill hillfort complex (WI027-078001- / WI021-080001-). A circular platform (diam. 9.9m x 10.9m), level in the interior, defined at NE by a rough wall of boulders (H 0.9m) and at SW (downslope) by an inner and outer ring of boulders. The platform on the downslope side is 1.1m above ground level. Description
On a terrace at the base of a steep S-facing slope below the stone rampart of the hillfort on Brusselstown Hill (WI027-018----), within the larger Spinans Hill hillfort complex (WI027-078001- / WI021-080001-). An enclosure (diam. 18.6m N-S; 20.8m E-W) defined by a wall (Wth 1m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 0.68m) well defined at E with a possible entrance (Wth 2.5m) at W. The N edge is defined by the natural steeply sloping rock outcrop and natural boulders and a mountain spring runs into the enclosure from this point. On a slight terrace on a steep SSW-facing slope. An oval hut site (int. diam. 7.5m NW-SE; 4.6m NE-SW) defined by moss and grass-covered boulders (Wth up to 1.6m) with a flat interior, sloping slightly to SW. Two field walls extend from the W quadrant, one towards NW and the other towards N. Some gorse is growing on the bank at NE. There is a possible entrance at SSW (Wth 1.6m). Description
Situated on the lower SE slopes of Brusselstown Hill. Foundations of a rectangular structure aligned ENE-WSW (int. dims. 7.2m x 4.7m) defined by a rough uncoursed rubble wall (Wth 0.65m; H 0.8m) with a straight inner face. There are no indications of a door or windows. A rough granite piscina (L 0.55m) with a channel running lengthways into a circular basin (diam. 0.1m) sits on the S wall of the church. The church is located towards the W side of a subtriangular enclosure marked on the 1838 OS 6-inch map (dims. c. 29m NW-SE; c. 25m NE-SW) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 3-4m; H 0.4m) except to the N where a line of upright slabs marks the inner face of the bank. Description
An oval enclosure (diam. c. 29m NW-SE; c. 26m NE-SW) indicated on the OS 1st ed. OS map, defined by a low wide bank (Wth 3-4m) except at N where the inner face of the enclosure is defined by a row of upright slabs (H c. 0.4-0.6m). A church (WI027-021001-) lies in the interior. Description
Situated on the SE edge of a moated site (WI027-022002-) on a gentle SE-facing slope below Brusselstown Ring (WI027-018---- / WI027-078---- and WI021-080----). On the 1838 OS 6-inch map a 'Castle in ruins' is indicated by an oblong structure (dims. c. 30m NE-SW; c. 8m NW-SE). This area is now occupied by a stony platform (dims. 17.6m NE-SW; 10m NW-SE; H 0.5m) partly defined by boulders and rough walling. No surviving indication of a building. - WI027-022002 Moated site
Description
Situated on a gentle SE-facing slope below Brusselstown Ring (WI027-018--- / WI027-78---- and WI021-080----). Quadrangular enclosure (dims. c. 55m NW-SE; 40-50m NE-SW) widening from the NW (Wth 40m) to the SE (Wth 50m) defined on the NW and SW sides by an earthen bank (Wth 1.5m; int. H 1.5m) and an external flat-bottomed fosse (Wth 2m; D 0.9m). The inner and outer faces of the bank are vertical with stone facing (to the base of the fosse externally). The SE side is defined by a steep scarp (H 1.6m) and an external fosse; the NE side is now marked by a field bank. No indication of an entrance or internal features. On the first edition OS 6-inch map a 'Castle in ruins' (WI027-022001-) is indicated on the SE edge of site. Description
A field system is evident on OS aerial photographs (c. 2005) and on Bing maps (Accessed: 4 December 2012) on the S-facing slopes below the stone rampart of the hillfort on Brusselstown Hill (WI027-018----), within the larger Spinans Hill hillfort complex (WI027-078001- / WI021-080001-). Part of this field system comprises a field boundary (double-walled in places) extending NNE-SSW 18.4m W of a hut site (WI027-019003-) and is composed of large boulders (Wth c. 0.7-1m). Description
In a secondary position in the front yard of an old farmhouse. In the vicinity of a church site (WI027-021001-) and castle site (WI027-022----). An oblong granite boulder (dims. L 0.62m; Wth 0.45m; T 0.25m contains a central, circular bowl (diam 0.19m; D 0.7m deep. The surface of bowl is slightly pocked. A possible font (WI027-021005-) was noted previously in the same farmyard (SMR file). The unknown precise original location of the bullaun has been designated (WI027-085001-).
