• WI025-012012 Promontory fort - coastal
  Description

  In grassland. 'Black Castle' (WI025-013----) which is located on a promontory that is cut off from the mainland by a deep rock-cut fosse may be on the site of an earlier promontory fort (Grogan and Kilfeather 1997, 181). Casey (2001, 103) further noted an earthen rampart, enclosing a roughly subrectangular area and possibly predating the castle, c. 55m to the W of the promontory. A number of modern gaps cut through the bank and one c. 12m from the N cliff edge has evidence of a collapsed and grassed-over hut site within it. A shallow wide external fosse (Wth 7m) and an outer bank were also intermittently visible close to the N cliff edge. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 6 January 2015

• WI025-013 Castle - Anglo-Norman masonry castle
  Description

  Situated on a rocky promontory SE of the present harbour, separated from the land at the W by a deep rock-cut fosse, with a steep drop to the sea on the other sides. The earliest reference to the castle is in 1174 in a grant from Henry II to Earl Richard (Clarke 1944, 1) and it later formed part of the medieval borough of Wicklow (WI025-012----). It may occupy the site of an earlier promontory fort. A 'rampart' indicated on the OS 6-inch maps further inland is not now visible at ground level. The keep is triangular in shape and was constructed of uncoursed rubble. A wall (max. present H 1.2m) survives along the W side (E of the fosse) with a central gap (Wth 1.5m) reached by a small flight of possibly modern rock-cut steps. At the junction of the W and SE walls are the remnants of a roughly quadrangular corner tower (H c. 4m) which extends beyond the line of the W and SE walls. Two loops survive, a small one in the S face and a larger one at SW. The SE wall of the castle (of which only the lower courses remain) is built on a plinth and survives to a height of 3.5m at the E (seaward) end. It contains a garderobe chute below which a small gully has been cut into the rock towards the sea. The wall (max. ext. H 2.8m) is curved and there is a doorway (Wth 1.2m) just above the junction with the SE wall. The interior of the site is very uneven, but there are traces of a rectangular structure (probably modern) in the SW corner, cut into the rock. (Clarke 1944, 1-22; Grogan and Hillery 1993, 36; Simpson 1994, 212-14) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wicklow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.   Attached complex-plan former house, comprising five-bay three-storey Georgian house, built c.1750, having three-bay side (south) elevation, with taller three-bay three-storey block to south end of rear (east) elevation, and two-storey annex joining to multiple-bay two-storey block to north end. Extensively renovated c.1986 following fire damage. Now in use as public house and guest house. Hipped, pitched, and half-hipped slate roofs with rendered chimneystacks and some cast-iron rainwater goods. Painted lined-and-ruled rendered walls with render quoins and decorative painted motifs. Square-headed window openings with painted sills, with timber sliding sash windows having six-over-six panes, three-over-three panes to top floor. Replacement casement windows to north block. Wrought-iron window guards to ground floor front elevation. Segmental-headed opening with painted double-leaf shutters and timber pulley to first floor front elevation. Elliptical-headed door openings, comprising decorative tympanum over timber panelled double doors, with sidelights, that to front elevation having tympanum set into nameplate supported on carved consoles. Square-headed door opening with timber panelled door to south elevation. Recent shopfront to south block. Beer garden to north, with recent walls and railings to riverside.

  Detached ten-bay three-storey over basement former gaol; originally built late eighteenth century and extended 1822, the present structure dates to 1842-3. Comprising entrance block with former chapel and day rooms to west, with cell block to east, with former refectory to basement. Renovated c.1995, now in use as visitor centre. Three-bay three-storey entrance block with four-storey entrance (west) façade and four-bay side elevation, flanked by two-storey blocks with curved walls, set forward of entrance, that to south having three-bay side elevation, that to north having four-bay side elevation, both with windowless front (west) elevations; seven-bay three-storey over basement cell block with three-storey canted projecting bay with hipped slate roof to east gable. Pitched slate roofs with cut granite copings, rendered and red brick chimneystacks, some cast-iron rainwater goods, and recent rooflights. Cut granite parapet, eaves course and block modillions to entrance front. Rubble stone walls with granite quoins and brick infill repairs to chimneystack to north gable, granite string course to front elevation. Interior of cell block has vaulted cells on three floors, accessed by timber floored galleries on cast-iron brackets and arch-beams to upper floors, with cantilevered half-spiral granite stairs to apse at east end, granite flags to ground floor and basement. Bellcote to south gable, having granite coping stones and alternate bands of cut granite and red brick. Yellow brick walls with red brick bands, cut granite plinth course, and cut granite copings to corner buttresses. Cast-iron vents to plinth. Pointed arch window openings, having chamfered red brick jambs and cut granite sloped sills, in pairs to nave with steel-framed fixed and hopper windows with mullioned panes, and having stained glass windows to chancel. Rose window to south gable, with carved stone tracery and with chamfered red brick surround and moulded red brick hood moulding with carved granite stops. Pointed arch door opening set in projecting gabled bay, having timber battened vertically divided door, with decorative cast-iron strap hinges, chamfered red brick surround with cut granite copings and finial to gable, granite step. Interior having carved timber panelled gallery to rear (south) with former classroom below; arched brace roof structure carried on painted corbels with timber sheeting. Timber pews and altar furniture. Recent church hall to west. Rendered piers with chamfered corners to site entrance, having pointed caps and plinths, cast-iron double-leaf gates, and rendered boundary walls with vertical coping stones.
