Description
Situated on a very gentle W-facing slope overlooking a stream, in pasture. The church and enclosure (WI047-006002-) depicted on the 1838 OS 6-inch map and named 'Site of Kilcavan Church'. The remains were described in the OS Letters (1838) as a pile of stones (O'Flanagan 1928, 38). An area of raised ground appears to indicate the location of the church. A crude Latin cross (WI047-006003-) has been incorporated in the field boundary immediately to the S of the church. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wicklow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). Description
On a very gentle W-facing slope overlooking a stream. The remains of the church (WI047-006001-) and enclosure are depicted on the 1838 OS 6-inch map and named 'Site of Kilcavan Church'. The enclosure is depicted as a semi-circular area (diam. c. 28m E-W), a field boundary runs E-W through what may have been the centre of the enclosure. It is not visible at ground level. A crude Latin cross (WI047-006003-) has been incorporated in the field boundary immediately S of the church. Description
On a very gentle W-facing slope overlooking a stream. The remains of the church (WI047-006001-) and enclosure (WI047-006002-) are depicted on the 1838 OS 6-inch map and named 'Site of Kilcavan Church'. A crude Latin cross (H 0.45m; Wth 0.4m; D 0.23m) has been incorporated into the N-face of the field boundary immediately S of the church. The field boundary (H 1m) is constructed of earth faced with stone with a ditch (Wth at top 2m; Wth at base 1.1m) running along the N side, the cross has been re-used as stone facing and is 0.3m above the ground level. - WI047-007 Ringfort - rath
Description
Situated on a gentle W-facing slope. Oval area (max. ext. dims. 62m N-S; 56m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (int. H 0.8m; ext. H 1m) and an external fosse (Wth l-2m). Within the ringfort is a subrectangular enclosure (dims. 32m x 25m) defined by a low earthen bank (Wth 2-2.5m; H 0.5m) with a slight fosse along the S and W sides.
