• WI025-012 Historic town
  Description

  The castle of Wicklow (WI025-013----) was granted to Strongbow by Henry II in 1173 (Scott and Martin 1978, 121), which appears to indicate that there was a pre-Norman settlement at this site. The name is derived from the Scandinavian; either Vikingalo, 'meadow of the Vikings', or Vik-lo 'meadow of the bay' (Oftedal 1976, 130). The 'King's street' is mentioned in a deed of 1256-68 (MacNeill 1950, 131) and although the town went into decline having been captured in 1301 it came to prominence once again in the late 16th and 17th centuries (Bradley and King 1989, 68). Kerrigan (1995, 38) states that in 1576 what must have been earthwork ramparts were constructed around Wicklow and Arklow. In addition to the Franciscan Friary (WI025-012002-) there is a reference to a Benedictine convent having existed here from 1448 to 1470 and to a leper hospital in existence in 1578 (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 325, 357). • WI025-012001 Castle - motte
  Description

  Situated on high ground overlooking the Leitrim River at the N end of Wicklow town. A steep-sided mound (H 6-7m) which has been dug into at the SE and is very overgrown with trees and briars. It was probably part of the medieval borough of Wicklow (WI025-012----). (Price 1936, 41) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wicklow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. • WI025-012002 Religious house - Franciscan friars
  Description

  Situated at the NW end of the town (WI025-012----). Founded during the reign of Henry III (1216-72), and first referred to in 1325 (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 261). A section of the N wall of the nave (H c. 6m) and parts of the S transept of the Franciscan friary, survives, constructed of uncoursed slaty limestone. The S wall of the transept has a round-headed three-light window, with traces of sandstone jambs. The nave has a large inserted arch, and the only original feature is part of a window splay at the E end. • WI025-012003 Church
  Description

  Romanesque doorway (WI025-012005-) of uncertain provenance now and placed in the Protestant parish church in Wicklow town. The Urban Survey recorded a tradition that the doorway, 'is said to have been brought from Old Kilcullen' while the Wicklow Inventory (830) records that the the doorway comes from Glebe townland about a mile to the NW (WI025-011003-) and was removed from the church site here (WI025-011001-) and placed in the Protestant parish church in Wicklow town. It is more likely that this doorway comes from a Romanesque church that may be located underneath the footprint of present C of I church in Wicklow town (pers. comm. Chris Corlett). • WI025-012004 Graveyard
  Description

  Recorded by the Urban Survey (Bradley and King 1989, 70) as ‘the church is said to be of seventeenth century in date but it is covered in pebbledash and the interior is plastered. It is a single aisled building with a west tower. The interior is lit by three round headed windows with chamfered granite jambs in each wall. It has a stone flagged floor in which there are some early eighteenth century memorials. Remains of a fifteenth century church (WI025-012003-) have been seen in the north side of the graveyard when graves are being dug (JRSAI cii (1972), 100). The dedication has been a matter of dispute between SS Mantan, Thomas and Patrick. In 1468 it is referred to as St Patrick’s church Wykenglo (MacNeill 1950, 244). Date of upload: 22 October 2012

• WI025-012005 Architectural feature
  Description

  Romanesque doorway of uncertain provenance now and placed in the Protestant parish church in Wicklow town. Recorded by the Urban Survey (Bradley and King 1989, 72) as ‘this door of three decorated orders is said to have been brought from Old Kilcullen and re-assembled as the south door of this church. The stone is slaty blue limestone and fragments of a later door (probably 13th century) were inserted at the base’. It is more likely that this doorway comes from a Romanesque church (WI025-012003-) that may be located within the graveyard of the present C of I church in Wicklow town (pers. comm. Chris Corlett). • WI025-012006 Font (present location)
  Description

  A font of uncertain provenance now located in the ground of the C of I church in Wicklow town. It has been suggested that this font may originally have come from the church at nearby Glebe (WI025-011002-). It is likely that this font comes from the medieval church probably located underneath the footprint of the present C of I church in Wicklow town (pers. comm. Chris Corlett). Recorded by the Urban Survey(Bradley and King 1989, 72) as an ‘early Norman/Romanesque font (dims: H. 0.42m; Wth.0.56m; D. 0.24m) of slaty limestone is placed at the east end of the church. It is tub shaped with two cushion capitals on the upper edge of the front face and one to either side giving the top of the font a square appearance. The front of the font is further decorated by triangular panels in alternating low and high relief outlined by raised mouldings. The remaining sides and back are decorated with sloping diamond shaped patterns in low relief. There is a raised band around the lower edge and a central drainage hole. The rim and left front of the bowl are damaged’. Date of upload: 22 October 2012.

• WI025-012008 Architectural fragment
  Description

  Described by the Urban Survey (Bradley and King 1989, 70-1) as a ‘Stone (dims. H 0.33m; Wth. 0.29m ; D 0.14m) with Romanesque Decoration. An arch stone, possibly from the Romanesque door inserted in the south wall, is placed close to the font at the east of the church (C of I). It has chevron, stepped and dot patterns’.   Description

  Recorded by the Urban Survey (Bradley and King 1989, 71) as the ‘memorial stone of Ro Phelps 1679. This upright memorial (H 0.68m; Wth -.5m; D 0.1m) is in the graveyard (WI025-012004-)to the church (WI025-012003-). It is inscribed: HERE LIETH THE/ BODY OF PHELPS WHO/ DEPARTED THIS/ LIFE THE 15TH DAY OF JVNE 1679’. Date of upload: 22 October 2012
