• CW013-013 Standing stone
  Description

  The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. On top of a low hill in undulating terrain c. 900m W of the River Slaney, in tillage. There are good views in all directions with mountains to the NE and hills to the E and SSW, though the views N and W are somewhat impeded by hedgerow. Granite stone with mica and quartz pebble inclusions, it has a roughly square cross-section (H 2.25m; 0.55m x 0.55m) with rounded edges, and six large, deep grooves. The pillar bulges slightly towards the base where the stone is exposed due to the erosion of the ground surrounding the stone. It inclines slightly to the W. There is a build up of soil around the base, forming a small island, as a result of upcast from ploughing. There is a second standing stone (CW013-012----) c. 85m to the NW.   The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of revision: 22 December 2009 Revised by: J. Farrelly Present remains consist of nave and chancel church, standing at centre of square graveyard (CW013-014002-). Foundations of W gable, exposed in adjacent grave plot, consist of massive, regular granite blocks with no visible mortar. According to O'Donovan (OSL 1839, 109-10), nave (dims. 11.9m x 7.3m) and chancel (6.4m x 5.5m) divided by 'stone pointed arch'. Arch (Wth c 2.8m) has collapsed (ITA Survey 1945). Broken ope in E gable.

  Description

  In tillage. A circular bivallate enclosure (overall diam. c. 62m) defined by roughly concentric fosses, visible on satellite imagery (Google Earth satellite imagery, 14 July 2018 and OS Ortho, 2005-2012), identified and reported by Jean-Charles Caillère. The fosses are c. 4m apart in the N portion of the monument and widen to c. 6m apart in the S portion. Also visible is a cropmark of a field boundary running NE-SW through the centre of the enclosure, this field boundary is indicated on the 1st (c. 1840) ed. OS 6-inch map and the revision.
