Probably an access route off the Carlow to Hacketstown Road to Busherstown graveyard (CW008-017003-) which came into use in the early post medieval period and was used up until the abandonment of the graveyard in the early 19th century.   Description

  Partially excavated in advance of construction of the N9/N10 Kilcullen-Waterford Road (Excavation Licence number E2580). Circular enclosure (diam. 32m) with entrance (c 7m) on NW side and internal structure. East half lay outside road take and geophysical survey of this showed evidence for a possible second entrance at SE side. A pit which contained quantities of Neolithic pottery was located 10.5m to the SW of the enclosure and was probably associated with the Neolithic structure located to the S.   Partially excavated in advance of construction of the N9/N10 Kilcullen-Waterford Road (Excavation Licence number E2581; area 1 in final report). A curvilinear ditch (Wth 3.25m; D 0.85m) with gently sloping sides and a relatively flat base cut into bedrock. Bank (H 1-2m) immediately to E. Only a small portion within the line of the road take. A number of pieces of 18th/19th century pottery were discovered in the basal fill. Most likely associated with Busherstown church and graveyard (CW008-017001- and CW008-017002-).   Description

  Excavated in advance of construction of the N9/N10 Kilcullen-Waterford Road (Excavation Licence number E2582). Circular pit (diam. 0.3m; D 0.19m) containing burnt human bone with no associated finds. A pit found c. 60m to the N was interpreted as having originally been used for the deposition of spent fuel from a fire and subsequently as a fire spot. A second pit was discovered c. 75m to the NE of the cremation pit and this produced evidence for in-situ burning which has been interpreted as being possibly related to the cremation process.   Description

  Excavated in advance of construction of the N9/N10 Kilcullen-Waterford Road (Excavation Licence number E2587). Close to a former stream channel, a large pit (L 5m; Wth 1.55m; D 0.83m) filled with burnt material, charcoal and heat-shattered stones. Two sherds of medieval pottery and part of an iron object were recovered from the upper fill but a sample from the base of the pit provided a radiocarbon date in the Early Bronze Age. A small pit (L 0.8m; Wth 0.73m; D 0.12m) located less than 2m to the SE and also contained charcoal and heat-shattered stones and provided a radiocarbon date in the Early Bronze Age.   Aerial photograph (GB90.CL.14, 26 July 1990) show cropmarks of a large rectilinear enclosure defined by a fosse and located due west of the graveyard. A curved fosse, probably part of an ecclesiastical enclosure surrounding the medieval church, intersects with the rectilinear enclosure; they are therefore not contemporaneous. A sub-circular arrangement (L 7m; Wth 6.25m) with four internal post-holes and a curving line of post-holes to the N may have represented a structure with porch or annex. • CW007-126 House - Neolithic
  Description

  On gentle south facing slope, partially excavated in advance of construction of the N9/N10 Kilcullen-Waterford Road (Excavation Licence number E2581; area 6 in final report). Rectangular shaped (excavated portion 9.3m E/W by 7.1m N/S), defined by a trench (Wth 0.45m; D 0.3m), with 3 internal compartments. Orientated in an E/W direction. A possible hearth was discovered towards the centre of the structure. No evidence for an entrance was discovered suggesting that it is at the western end and preserved in-situ outside the road take. The structure was most likely destroyed by fire. A large assemblage of Carinated Neolithic pottery was found. A cremation pit (CW007-127----) was discovered inside the structure.   Detached three-bay two-storey over basement farmhouse with dormer attic, c. 1725. Renovated and extended to right, c. 1830, with door opening remodelled and interior remodelled. Group of detached outbuildings to site. Walled garden to site.
