  Description

  Shown as oval embanked and planted enclosure and named 'Round O Rath' on 1839 'OS 6-inch' map (max. dims. c. 90m NE-SW, 70m NW-SE). Present remains are of large quarry hole enclosed and planted to make an ornamental feature. A number of prehistoric pits and postholes were exposed immediately to the E during the development work of the golf-course in 2006 (Excavation Licence number 06E0499). They are preserved in situ.   Description

  The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Tower formerly attached to another building at N as shown by doorways in N wall at all three levels. Building may have included medieval or seventeenth-century structure. Two floors (wooden) over ground floor. Many large Georgian-style windows reaching to floor with fireplaces in NW corners and extensive use of red brick. Gables on N and S walls. Debris in field, possibly of original attached building.

  Description

  The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Very distinct curve in field boundary marking E-S-W edge of possibly originally circular monument (max. diam. c. 50m), or landscape feature connected with Carrickduff Castle (CW021-002----).

• CW021-005 Excavation - miscellaneous
  Description

  A number of prehistoric pits and postholes were exposed immediately to the E of 'Round O Rath' (CW006-001----) during the development of a golf-course in 2006 (Excavation Licence number 06E0499). These features were preserved in situ. (McLoughlin C. 2009, 43). Monitoring in 2007 exposed further pits and post-holes which were excavated. Initial analysis of these suggested they were of Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age date. (McLoughlin C. 2010, 21) Reference: McLoughlin, C. (2010),Carrickduff Prehistoric. In I. • Newtownbarry House, gate lodge, 1915–1925 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached three-bay single-storey gate lodge with half-dormer attic, dated 1920, on a rectangular plan. Now disused. Pitched slate roof with roll moulded terracotta ridge tiles, red brick Running bond chimney stacks having stringcourses below corbelled stepped capping supporting yellow terracotta tapered pots, decorative timber bargeboards to gables, and cast-iron rainwater goods on timber eaves boards on slightly overhanging exposed timber rafters retaining cast-iron downpipes. Creeper-covered fine roughcast walls with rusticated cut-granite date stone ("1920"). Pair of square-headed door openings with concealed rough cut granite lintels framing timber doors. Square-headed window openings with cut-granite sills, and concealed rough cut granite lintels framing timber casement windows having horizontal glazing bars. Set perpendicular to road at entrance to grounds of Newtownbarry House.

  Description

  Gateway, extant 1839, on a symmetrical plan comprising pair of granite ashlar piers on chamfered plinths having cut-granite capping supporting wrought iron double gates. Road fronted at entrance to grounds of Newtownbarry House.
