Shown on 1839 'OS 6-inch' map as circular enclosure (max. diam. c. 50m) with circular annexes at NW (max. diam. c. 30m) and SE (max. diam. c. 45m). shown on 1938-9 ed, as slightly angular enclosure with single annexe at NE. Site covered with scrub and features are difficult to discern. Aerial photographs (CUCAP AYL 16-19) show conjoined bivallate ringfort with annexe to NW (showing only on AYL 18, 19).

H to fosse base 2.4m) with external fosse (est D c. 1m; Wth of fosse at base 2-3m). Several gaps through bank; that at SE is probably original and has causeway. Interior uneven.

  Initially identified (in Area A) during archaeological test trenching in advance of a quarry development in 2003 (Excavation Licence No. 03E1336) (Ó Drisceoil 2006, 24-5). Full excavation took place in 2007 (Excavation Licence No. 07E0962). A figure of eight shaped corn-drying kiln (L 2.4m; Wth 0.75m-1.5m; D 0.35m) with near vertical sides and a flat base was uncovered in close proximity to a possible Neolithic structure (CW016-120007-) and Bronze Age pit burial (CW016-120008-). • CW016-120002 Kiln - corn-drying
  Description

  Initially identified (in Area B) during archaeological test trenching in advance of a quarry development in 2003 (Excavation Licence No. 03E1336) (Ó Drisceoil 2006, 24-5). Full excavation took place in 2007 (Excavation Licence No. 07E0962) and revealed two adjoining pits. The larger pit (L 3.2m; Wth 1.6m; D 0.8m) was concave in shape and had a concave base, while the smaller pit (L 1.25m; Wth 1.46m; D 0.23m) was sub-oval in shape with concave sides and a flat base. Charcoal, burnt cattle and pig bones, grains of hulled barley and numerous species of wild plant seeds were found in the fill of the pits. Burnt bone recovered from the larger pit produced a radiocarbon date of cal 18 BC to cal 118 AD. Found in close proximity to a series of pits, hearths, post-holes and stakeholes (CW016-120003-), a possible fulacht fia (CW016-120006-) and two-stone lined features (CW016-120005-).   Description

  Initially identified (in Area B) during archaeological test trenching in advance of a quarry development in 2003 (Excavation Licence No. 03E1336) (Ó Drisceoil 2006, 24-5). Full excavation took place in 2007 (Excavation Licence No. 07E0962) (Cagney 2010; 22-3). Excavation revealed a sub-rectangular shaped trough (L 2m; Wth 1.77m; D 0.3m) which was filled with charcoal and burnt stones. No further burnt material was noted outside the trough. Found in close proximity to an Iron Age corn-drying kiln (CW016-120002-) and series of hearths, pits, postholes and stakehole (CW016-120003-). (Clark and Kozlowska 2009, 17, 26). • CW016-120005 Kiln
  Description

  Initially identified (in Area B) during archaeological test trenching in advance of a quarry development in 2003 (Excavation Licence No. 03E1336) (Ó Drisceoil 2006, 24-5). Full excavation took place in 2007 (Excavation Licence No. 07E0962). Two stone-lined linear features were excavated (Cagney 2010; 22-3). The longer features (L 2.4m; Wth 0.4m; D 0.24m) sides were lined with flat slabs and the base with burnt oak planks. The second feature (L 1.8m; Wth 0.52m; D 0.18m) was also lined with stones however the majority had fallen into the central area. The soil in which both features were cut displayed evidence for intense burning and the fill of both contained quantities of charcoal and unidentified burnt bone. It is suggested that these features may represent the 'remains of a parallel-flue kiln' used to fire building materials and large pots. (Clark and Kozlowska 2009; 27).   Description

  Initially identified (in Area A) during archaeological test trenching in advance of a quarry development in 2003 (Excavation Licence No. 03E1336) (Ó Drisceoil 2006, 24-5). Full excavation took place in 2007 (Excavation Licence No. 07E0962). A series postholes and stakeholes appeared 'to form a rudimentary L-shaped alignment at the NW end of a large pit' (Clark and Kozlowska 2009, 21). A radiocarbon date of cal 3644-3523 BC' was recovered from one of the postholes (ibid). Found in close proximity to a series of pits, hearths, post-holes and stakeholes (CW016-120006-) and a Bronze Age pit burial (CW016-120008-).   Description

  Initially identified (in Area A) during archaeological test trenching in advance of a quarry development in 2003 (Excavation Licence No. 03E1336) (Ó Drisceoil 2006, 24-5). Full excavation took place in 2007 (Excavation Licence No. 07E0962). An oval pit (L 1.2m; Wth 0.83M; D 0.37m) which contained 66 fragments of unburnt human bone identified as that of a probable female adult. A sample of the bone produced a radiocarbon date of cal 1407-1133 BC. This pit was truncated by a second pit (L 0.68m; Wth 0.61m) which was sub-circular in plan and contained 63 fragments of human bone which have been attributed to an adult (probably the same adult as was in the former pit), a child and an infant. 260 sherds of Middle to Late Bronze Age pottery were also recovered from this pit. (Clark and Kozlowska 2009, 14). Found in close proximity to a series of pits, hearths, post-holes and stakeholes (CW016-120006-) and a possible Neolithic structure (CW016-120007-). • CW016-130 Rock art (present location)
  Description

  Situated just off the crest of a hill with good views to the W overlooking the Barrow and the Castlecomer Ridge and to the E towards Mount Leinster and the Blackstairs. A large granite boulder presently set on edge (L 1.8m; Wth 0.9m; T 0.44m), probably originally earthfast and most likely moved during modern land reclamation from a location some distance to the E and uphill of its present position. A vein of quartz runs across the length of the stone and forms a curve at one end of the stone. Set within the curve of the quartz vein is a large bowl-shaped cupmark (diam. 13cm; D 4cm), enclosed by a well-defined ring (Wth 5cm; D 1.5cm), forming a circle(max. diam. 31cm).   Description

  On a W-facing slope of a ridge which runs N-S, in pasture. There is rock art (CW016-130----) on another boulder c. 730m to the E on the summit of the ridge. • CW016-156 Standing stone
  Description

  In pasture on ground sloping gently down from an adjacent roadway at W. Views restricted uphill to the S and W but wide views of rolling countryside to  N and E. A granite standing stone orientated NNE-SSW rises from a rectangular base (H 1.2m, L 0.51, D 0.25m).   Description

  Detached six-bay three-storey former corn mil, c. 1830. Extended to sides. Renovated, c. 1985, to accommodate residential use. Interior retains original cast-iron waterwheel.

  Description

  Detached granite ashlar Gothic Revival Catholic church, c. 1835, on a cruciform plan with entrance tower having crenellated parapet and needle spire. Interior retains arcades to transepts, three balconies and plaster vaulted ceiling. Design attributed to Thomas Cobden. Entrance courtyard with group of wall monuments, c. 1825 - c. 1850.
