Parts of this appear to have been incorporated into a modern house which now occupies the site. An earlier account (Davies 1948, 112) described what must have been a flanker at the SE corner of the bawn — a two-storey strong structure with cross-vaulting over the upper floor. A tunnel (dims. 1.8m x 1.2m) roofed with slabs apparently ran outside the bawn enclosure in a northerly direction. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995).   Raised circular area (int. dims. 59m NNW-SSE; 52m ENE-WSW) enclosed by a substantial bank of earth and stone and a wide, deep fosse which has been largely infilled from SW-N-NNE. Well-defined break in bank at NNW probably represents original entrance. The internal area has been planted with deciduous trees.   Description

  Detached neo-Classical nine-bay three-storey over basement country house, built 1802-3, as addition house of c.1780 which incorporated an earlier house of c.1700, both demolished c.1960. Retaining portico of c.1780 house, and having central three-bay pedimented breakfront to garden elevation. Now in use as hotel, connected to extensive hotel extension by means of a glazed lobby of c.2005. Hipped slate roof on a quadrangular plan, rendered chimneystacks having moulded coping, concealed gutters with cast-iron downpipes. Pediment having carved Maxwell and Barry family coat-of-arms and block modillions over eaves cornice also having block modillion. Smooth rendered walls having raised plinth to ground floor sill level, plat band at first floor sill level and cut stone sills to second floor. Square-headed window openings diminishing in size to upper storey, having six-over-six timber sash windows and three-over-three to upper storey, three tall recessed round-arched window openings to ground floor of breakfront with plat band impost, one adapted as french doors. Double-height hexastyle Greek Doric portico having plain entablature with guttae to architrave, relocated to north-east elevation, now within hotel foyer. Internally series of enfilade reception rooms with historic plasterwork and joinery, and slender cantilevered stone staircase in elliptical hall.

  Description

  Multiple-bay single- and two-storey farmyard complex, built c.1780, having outbuildings arranged around four courtyards, with some upper storeys formerly also used as worker’s accommodation. Pitched slate roofs, replacement rainwater goods with few sections of cast-iron rainwater goods surviving. Squared rubble limestone walls, some limewashed. Square-headed window and door openings, some cut stone sills. Metal diamond-pane windows at ground level, fixed multiple pane timber windows in places. Sheeted timber or timber louvres to upper level openings. Sheeted timber doors. Courtyards subdivided by buildings and rubble stone walls with square-profile gate piers with pyramidal capstones. Bounded by roughly dressed stone walls and entrance gate of similar type to courtyard at main road to south. Square-headed integral door opening with sheeted timber door to north wall. Walled garden to east of outbuildings with rubble stone lower walls and red brick upper walls with integral segmental-arched red brick dressed entrance to east wall. Rebuilt south wall and red brick west wall.

  Description

  Attached single-bay two-storey threshing barn with corn loft over, built c.1780, having full height gabled projection with semi-circular integral carriage arch, bellcote to apex of west gable, two-bay single-storey lean-to to north elevation, hipped three-bay single-storey block to east elevation. Now disused. Pitched slate roof, sections of cast-iron rainwater goods. Squared rubble stone walls, cut stone voussoirs to arch. Slit openings to west side of rear south elevation. Square-headed door openings with sheeted timber doors to lean-to. Square-headed openings with bars to east block. Cobbles, exposed rubble stone walls, and timber ceiling to interio. Centrally positioned in farmyard complex, providing access through the arch between the two eastern yards.

  Description

  Detached three-bay single-storey with dormer attic estate worker's house, built c.1870, having central projecting gabled porch. Slate roof with terracotta ridge tiles having trefoils apertures, decorative bargeboards to gables, cast-iron and replacement rainwater goods. Roughcast rendered walls with chamfered smooth rendered plinth. Square-headed openings with stone sills. Three-over-six timber sash windows to ground level to front, porch, and south-west gable. Paired three-over-three sash windows to attic level of north-east gable. Sheeted timber door to side of porch. The front door faces the former rear drive to Farnham House. Remains of walled garden to the rear.
