- CL015-069 Ringfort - rath
Description
In meadow in hilly pasture surrounded by marsh and scrub, with clear views to the N and W, overlooked by higher ground to the E and S. Hachured on the 1840 and 1916 OS 6-inch maps. A subcircular rath (23m N-S; 21.75m E-W) defined by a steep-sided round-topped bank (int. H 0.6m; ext. H 1.7-2.1m; Wth 5m), a fosse (Wth 2.5m; ext. D 1.9m) and an outer bank (Wth 6m; ext. H 0.8m). The fosse and outer bank are only present around the N of the monument extending from NW to NE. Stone within the fabric of both banks suggests that they were originally revetted. An original entrance gap is present at the NW (Wth at base 3.4m). The interior is flat and featureless. Compiled by: Mary Tunney and Eve Campbell Date of upload: 15 August 2023

Description
In pasture on the top of a prominent ridge with panoramic views c. 200m N of a stream. Hachured on the 1840 and 1916 OS 6-inch maps. A subcircular rath (21.5m E-W; 19m N-S) defined by a low earthen bank (int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.6-1.15m) and a fosse (Wth 2-2.3m). The bank has been reduced to a scarp (H 0.8m) at SE, S and NW. The fosse is legible as a shallow reed-covered depression. No entrance gap or causeway survives. The interior is dished and slopes gently down to the NNW, with no visible features. There is a rath (CL015-070002-) c. 30m to the ENE. Compiled by: Mary Tunney and Eve Campbell Date of upload: 15 August 2023

A subcircular rath (30.5m E-W; 26.25m N-S) defined by a low degraded earthen bank largely reduced to a scarp (H 0.9-1.45m; Wth 2m), and a fosse legible as a dense bank of reed growth around the perimeter of the bank and scarp (Wth 2-3m). A lowering of the scarp at the E (L 6m) may indicate an original entrance. The interior is slightly dished and slopes slightly to E. There are no visible internal features. There is a rath (CL015-070001-) c. 30m WSW. Compiled by: Mary Tunney and Eve Campbell Date of upload: 15 August 2023
