  Description

  In undulating pasture. Depicted as hachured oval enclosure (c. 55m NE-SW; c. 45m NW-SE) on 1842 OS 6-inch map. Low rise survives, irregular in shape and bisected off-centre to W by field boundary. According to local information, portion to E of field boundary 'levelled off' c. 1980; no bank or fosse then existed.   Description

  In pasture, on gentle N-facing slope. Depicted as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 50m) on 1842 OS 6-inch map, incorporated into field fence system on W side. Levelled; circular area (46.4m E-W; 43.8m N-S) enclosed by low rise (int. H 0.15m) to N, E and S, with shallow external fosse. Evidence for second bank as low rise (H 0.25m) NE->SSW, with shallow outer fosse (D 0.3m) to SE. Break in inner bank (Wth 5.4m) to NNW; shallow depression (L 16.4m) runs southwards from break into interior.   Description

  In pasture, on N-facing slope. Roughly square area (33m E-W; 30m N-S) with rounded corners, defined by low, grass-covered earthen bank (int. H 0.6m; ext. H 0.4m); shallow intervening fosse; second low, grass-covered earthen bank (int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.35m) to S, W and N. Stream flowing in fosse on W side, continues N for short distance before turning E to run N of second bank and S of field boundary. Second bank survives as low rise on N and S sides, more substantial to W; on S side it extends beyond site for c. 13.4m where it then curves back towards centre of E bank, stopping short of external fosse. Third linear earthen bank exists outside this curving second bank on E side running NNE-SSW, with remains of external fosse (D 0.8m). Fosse outside second bank on S side extends beyond enclosure to E and W. Interior grass-covered; W half at slightly lower level than E half. Area of second bank disturbed to NE and NW leaving no trace of second bank. Ringfort (12227) a short distance to E in same field.   Description

  In pasture, on N-facing slope. Circular area (diam. c. 25m) enclosed by two earthen banks (inner bank: int. H 0.55m) with intervening fosse. Outer fosse survives to W and N; field boundary runs outside outer bank to E, with stream flowing in between; wide marshy depression (D 0.7m; Wth 12.6m) to S. Enclosure heavily overgrown with hawthorn bushes. Rectangular enclosure (CO002-023---) c. 20m to SW in same field, and circular enclosure (CO002-025---) in adjoining field to E.   In pasture, on slight N-facing slope. No visible surface trace of castle. Photograph taken in 1909 (Grove White 1905-25, vol. 1, 316) shows several stumps of masonry on raised platform; according to local information, these were levelled during land reclamation c. 1955; field known as 'castle field'. Castle of the Earls of Desmond, granted to Hugh Cuffe in 1597 as part of Munster Plantation (ibid., 317), subsequently acquired by Richard Boyle, 1st Earl of Cork, who probably built mansion depicted here on Down Survey (1655-6) (1655-6) barony map.
