  Description

  Late 18th/early 19th century 2-storey house over basement. Probably originally rectangular with 7-bay entrance front (S); central fanlighted doorway with limestone surround and sidelights; basement not visible to front. Three-bay bows added to either side of entrance, which is now obscured by porch. Rear windows set asymetrically at basement and ground floor levels; round-headed stairway window. Gabled projection to rear. Inscribed stone from tower house at Kilbrittain (Vol. 1, 3083) now in grounds. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.   Description

  In the grounds of Upton House (CO096-036----), near Inishannon. The keystone of a joggel arched mantlepiece inscribed "AD 1596 DONALDUS CARTI ET MARGARETA GERALD FECERUNT" (which Coakley (1920, 23) translates as 'Donal McCarthy and Margaret Fitzgerald made (this tower) AD 1596'). Hawkes (1951, 51) recorded that this stone was moved from Kilbrittain Castle (CO124-025001-) to Upton house. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992).   Description

  Detached three-bay single-storey former gate lodge, built c.1860, having porch addition to west and single- and two-storey extension to north. Now in use as private house. Hipped and pitched artificial slate roof with rendered chimneystack and uPVC rainwater goods. Roughly dressed sandstone and rendered walls. Round-headed window openings with stone sills, dressed voussoirs and replacement timber sliding sash windows. Timber casement windows to extension. Segmental-headed door opening with red brick voussoirs and replacement double-leaf timber door to porch. Circular-profile carved limestone gate piers on square-profile bases with semi circular carved floral caps, flanked by limestone plinth wall with cast-iron railings and double-leaf cast-iron gates. Located at entrance to Upton House.

  Description

  Detached nine-bay two-storey former country house, built c.1780, with full-height three-bay bows flanking single-bay entrance, and having recessed two-bay two-storey wings to sides (north-east, south-west). Glazed porch addition to entrance and recent single-storey extension to side (south-west). Further recent extensions to rear (north-west). Now in use as nursing home. Hipped slate roof with over hanging eaves, rendered chimneystacks and cast-iron rainwater goods. Lined-and-ruled rendered walls throughout. Square-headed window openings with tooled limestone sill and uPVC casement windows throughout. Round-headed door opening with tooled stone surround spider web fanlight, glazed timber door and flanking square-headed sidelights with geometrical timber tracery.

  Detached five-bay two-storey house, built c.1820, having flat-roofed single-storey porch to front (south) and recent glazed addition to side (west). Two-storey return and recent single-storey lean-to additions to rear (north). Hipped slate roofs with rendered eaves course, chimneystacks and uPVC rainwater goods. Rendered walls with raised render quoins to front (south) elevation. Camber-headed window openings with stone sills and raised render voussoirs to front and side (east, west) elevations, having square-headed window openings with tooled stone sills elsewhere. Two-over-two and two-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows. Round-headed window openings to porch with stone sills having fixed timber-framed multiple-pane windows. Segmental-headed door opening to porch having moulded render surround flanked by corner pilasters surmounted by architrave, frieze and dentilated cornice. Replacement timber panelled door with sidelights, fanlight and stepped approach. Camber-headed door opening with raised render voussoirs to side (east) elevation, having replacement glazed timber door and single-pane fanlight. Elliptical-headed archway to side (east) elevation having exposed rubble limestone walls with impost course, flanked by camber-headed pedestrian openings leading to rear yard with attendant outbuildings. Ranges of outbuildings to north. Eastern range comprising two- and three-bay single-storey blocks. Pitched slate roofs with timber clad eaves, render gable copings, uPVC rainwater goods and red brick bellcote to north gable. Whitewashed and exposed rubble stone walls. Rendered wall to south elevation with blind oculus window having stone surround and round-headed recessed bays having stone surrounds and voussoirs. Square-headed window openings having timber lintels and fixed timber-framed windows. Square-headed door opening with exposed timber lintel and replacement timber battened door. Square-headed carriage openings with exposed timber lintels and replacement timber battened doors. Northern range comprising group of three, three-bay two-storey outbuildings. Pitched slate roof with timber eaves, recent rooflights and uPVC rainwater goods. Roughcast rendered walls rubble stone walls. Square-headed window openings with replacement slate sills and replacement timber casement windows. Square-headed door openings with timber battened doors. Western range comprising three-bay single-storey outbuilding, now in use as dwelling. Pitched slate roof with timber clad eaves course, render gable copings and uPVC rainwater goods. Rubble stone walls with whitewashed sections. Square-headed window openings throughout with stone sills, raised render surrounds and two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows to front (east) elevation, uPVC casement window to side (north) elevation. Square-headed door opening with exposed iron lintel having replacement double-leaf timber-glazed doors with glazed side panels.
