  Description

  On W side of road, 200m S of Garryvoe crossroads; irregular shaped graveyard (c. 60m E-W; 30m N-S) which contains ruins of parish church of Garryvoe (CO077-03702-) to N of centre. Church is built on platform which extends to S and E of structure; older gravemarkers are confined to this area and inside church; earliest headstone dates to 1751 (Coleman 1907-9c), decorated with 'large Cherub and scroll border terminals' (O'Shea 1988, 80). In occasional use with new burials to W of church. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.   Description

  Just N of centre in graveyard (CO077-03701-), ruins of rectangular gabled church (16.9m E-W; 7.8m N-S), walls stand to near full height but ivy-clad. Entered by doorway near W end of S wall, roundly pointed stone arch over door with lintel over doorway embrasure. Central two-light ogee-headed window in E gable, mullion missing; embrasure roofed by plank-centred segmental arch. Single-light ogee-headed windows near E end of N and S walls; single-light flat-headed attic window at centre of W gable. Wall presses at E end of N wall and S end of E wall; piscina, in recess with pointed arch, near E end of S wall. Single stone (H 0.18m; 0.35m x 0.53m) projects from inside of E wall, between E window and NE corner (see CO088-03302-); may have supported statue (Coleman 1913, 31). In front of E window very ruined remains of stone altar. Well-preserved late medieval parish church of Garryvoe; in repair in 1615 (Brady 1863, vol. 2, 213), but in ruins by 1774 (ibid., 230). • CO077-038 Castle - tower house
  Description

  In gentle rolling pasture, remains of very small square tower (4.2m N-S; 4.2m E-W), partially ivy-clad. SE corner has fallen but otherwise tower stands to just above 1st floor level. Ground floor covered by segmental, wicker-centred vault (axis N-S), intact except where it abutted S wall; pointed vault over 1st floor (axis E-W), broken at SE corner. Ground floor entered by lintelled door at S end of E wall; lintel now cracked and most of S side of door fallen. First floor entered by lintelled door in S corner of W wall, but only N side of door now survives. First floor lit by central lintelled windows in N and W walls, with narrow flat-headed lights. In Hartnett's time (1950, 51-2) SE corner stood to 2nd floor level, as did other walls. He records a stairwell in SE corner of which nothing now survives. At ground level, on external NE corner, is a poorly preserved projection; Hartnett saw this as 'probably a buttress'. Directly above this projection, at 1st/2nd floor level, are a series of projecting stones; similarly on E face, at the same level, are further projecting stones,though set back from the corner- exact function unclear. According to Hartnett (ibid., 52) 'castle was probably erected by the Carews' who held this land 'all through the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries'; Coleman (1913, 32) notes that 'nothing seems to be known' of its history.
