Description
In pasture, on S-facing slope to SE of Knocknagree village. Circular area (46m N-S) enclosed by overgrown earthen bank (int. H 1.9m; ext. H 2.2m). Break (Wth 2m) in bank to SW. Interior covered in tall rough grass; souterrain (CO029-02702-) at N side. Recorded by Bowman (1934, 658) as single-ramparted fort in E. MacSweeney's, with 'fosse c. 14 feet wide, now practically filled in'. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Description
Built against natural slope, indicated on 1842 OS 6-inch map at E end of 'Corn Mill (in ruins)'. Random-rubble front wall (H 3m; Wth c. 7.3m) on S side, retains earthen core; lintelled corbelled recess (H 1.89m; Wth 1.39m; D c. 1.35m), sloping slabs at rear. Funnel infilled. Remains of shed walls (2.75m N-S, 2.25m E-W) in forecourt, on E side. Mill no longer survives, portion of millrace remains.
