  Description

  S of Rathcool-Mountgabriel boundary; E slopes of mountain. Near-horizontal working, driven 230° into N facing rock scarp. Excavation of waterlogged peat infill exposed primary mine sediment containing wood fragments and stone mauls. Overall length c. 2m; entrance (Wth 1.8m; H 1.2m); interior (Wth 0.8m; H 0.6m). No extant spoil dumps outside mine; probably spread over bottom of E-W valley below entrance. Radiocarbon dates for primary wood: (BM-2336) 3130 ± 80 BP and (GrN 15967) 3280 ± 35 BP (O'Brien Mine 24) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.   In pasture, below break on S-facing slope. Sub-circular area (17.8m N-S; 29.5m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 1.1m), with external fosse (D 0.55m) N->SE.   Description

  In level pasture on E side of small valley, at SE foot of Mount Gabriel. Stones, aligned NNE-SSW, stand 1.4m apart; overall length 3.65m. NE stone is 1.3m L, 0.4m T and 1.5m H.   Description

  Abutting E wall of Union Workhouse (CO139-040001-) enclosing wall. Shown as sub-triangular field on OS 6-inch map (1901). Total of forty-two uninscribed gravemarkers concentrated in S half of field. Known locally to be burial place of famine victims and inmates of nearby workhouse.   Description

  In rough hill pasture, on the SE side of a NE-SW valley, overshadowed by the slopes of Mount Gabriel at the NW and by a rocky ridge at the SE. The remains of a D-shaped hut site (2m NW-SE) defined by the jumbled lower course of a curving stone wall (T 0.5m; H 0.3m) with a straight SE side (L 2.1m) which comprises the base of outcropping rock. The stone wall protrudes above the surface of the bog. There is another hut site (CO139-074002-) 25m to the NW. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.   Description

  In rough hill pasture, on the NW side of a NE-SW valley, overshadowed by the slopes of Mount Gabriel at the NW and by a rocky ridge at the SE. The poorly preserved remains of a circular hut site (2.7m NE-SW; 2.6m NW-SE) defined by partially exposed stones (T 0.65m; H 0.2m) SW-NE that are either leaning or have fallen and elsewhere by traces of a low grassy bank SE-NW. The hut site has been raised (H 0.2m) at the SE and cut (D 0.3m) into the upslope at the NW to compensate for the hillslope. Another hut site (CO139-074001-) is 25m to the SE.
