• CO151-019001 Promontory fort - coastal
  Description

  Small rectangular area projecting SW into Castlehaven Bay. Westropp (1914, 99) noted, at the neck, 'two very shallow straight fosses with an intervening wall and an inner one revetting a mound'. He describes the outer fosse as a 'shallow hollow' and the next wall outside as probably recent. Defences remains as in Westropp's time. Both inner (H 1.35m) and outer (H 1.2m) banks are earthen. Inner fosse is completely infilled; outer fosse evident (D 0.9m). Central gap in both banks where causeway crosses outer fosse. Interior is grass, heather and gorse covered with rock outcropping. • CO151-019002 Structure
  Description

  In pasture, on SW-facing slope, 40m NE of coastal promontory fort (CO151-019001-). Low rectangular mound (5.3m E-W; 3m N-S), stone-edged at N, E and S; to W, sunken cruciform passage (L 3.1m; Wth 2.8m; D 0.78m), stone-faced. Formerly covered by earthen mound, removed by T. Boyle Somerville in 1930s. Depicted as small open rectangular structure, named 'Spanish Ovens' on OS 6-inch map (1842), and as two small square blocks, indicating a structure, on OS 6-inch map (1902). Date or function not evident from remains. According to Coleman (1922, 68), ovens used by Spanish c. 1600. Westropp (1914-16, 100-1) was of the opinion that the ovens was 'a small hut with two oblong rooms' used by the Spanish, but part of a pre-existing settlement. • CO151-020001 Burial ground
  Description

  In rough grazing on a W-facing slope. Marked as a triangular area on OS 1st ed. map (1842) and named 'Burial Place'; a smaller rectangular area (c. 10m NE-SW; c. 5m NW-SE) defined by a broken line and named 'Burial Ground (Disused)' (CO151-020003-) is indicated on the 1902 OS 6-inch map c. 30m to the E. The boundaries of the burial ground are difficult to define due to heavy overgrowth. The S bank has been removed for a new laneway; a steep scarp defines the N side. According to local information, Vice Admiral Boyle Somerville excavated here during the 1930s and uncovered 28 burials. Also according to local information, a stone-lined grave (c. 1m x c. 1m; D. c. 1m) (CO151-020004-) was found in the NE corner of the burial ground. This burial ground is known as 'Cill an Chuais - Church of the recess or hollow' (O'Donoghue 1986, 42). There is a possible souterrain (CO151-020002-) c. 40m to the NE.   Description

  In pasture, on the N side of a modern lane in a field known as the 'religín' and below the crest of a hill overlooking the sea to the W. According to local information, infilled in 1850s; said to extend in N-S direction. No visible surface trace. Named 'Cave' on the 1842 OS 6-inch map.   A small rectangular area (c. 10m x 10m) defined by a broken line is named 'Burial Ground (Disused)' on the 1902 OS 6-inch map. It is in the N end of a field known as the 'religín' and is c. 15m S of a possible souterrain (CO151-020002-) in the same field.
