  No trace of this souterrain which lay under an extension to the hospital now survives. It was situated close to 'Kilbride Burial Ground' (DG011-037). • DG011-037001 Ecclesiastical enclosure
  Description

  Marked on the OS 6-inch maps as Kilbride, the site consists of a subrectangular enclosure c. 32m E-W × c. 20m N-S. There is an entrance in the NE corner. The W side of the site is raised above the external ground. Just W of the enclosure is a standing stone 1.75m high and 0.65m N-S and 0.34m to .21m thick. On the W face is an incised cross with D-shaped terminals (DG011-037002-). On the N, narrow edge is a shallow, incised human face (DG011-037003-). The site is located in grazing land sloping gently to the W and the Glentogher river, about half a mile S of the Carndonagh complex (DG011-035). See also souterrain (DG011-036). The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' Date of upload: 22 September 2008 Excavation Number : 95E149 The site of the proposed development is located 20m south of the enclosing element of an early ecclesiastical site recorded in the Archaeological Survey of County Donegal as site No. 1517(1983, 243). In July 1995, a series of seven test-trenches were excavated down to natural boulder clay or gravel with a mechanical digger at the northern end of the proposed development site. Trenches 1-5, which ran in a north-south direction, were 30m long. Trench 6 ran perpendicular to Trenches 1-5 and was 75m long. Trench 7, which was parallel to and approximately 30m south of Trench 6, was 74m long. All trenches were 2m wide. The stratigraphy within each trench was as follows: Trenches 1-3, 5-7: The sod and topsoil directly overlay a natural orange/light brown boulder clay and gravel. Trench 4: At the northern end, the soil and topsoil (0.34m thick) directly overlay a natural orange and mottled grey boulder clay. A modern plastic water-pipe ran east-west across the northern end of the trench. Further south of the pipe, a layer of stone (0.8m thick) directly overlay a natural grey daub. At the southern end of the trench, underlying the sod and topsoil (0.5m thick), was a layer of large boulders (1m thick) which lay directly on a natural grey daub. Water was evident at this level and the boulders may represent a recent attempt at filling up this marshy area. No archaeological features or small finds were recovered from any of the test-trenches.   Description

  There is no trace of the single-ringed 'Fort' marked on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map. The area is now a garden and the topography suggests an earthen enclosure. Architectural heritage

• Millbrae House, house, 1850–1890 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached four-bay two-storey house with attic level, built c. 1870, having projecting single-bay flat-roofed entrance porch to the front elevation (north), and with modern single-storey return to rear (south). Half-hipped artificial slate roof having projecting eaves course with consoles brackets with render stringcourse under, and with a central pair of rendered chimneystacks. Replacement rainwater goods. Flat-roof to porch with moulded cornice. Roughcast rendered walls over projecting smooth rendered plinth course, and with smooth rendered stringcourse to ground and first floor level brought over window openings. Shallow segmental-headed window openings with replacement windows, and with continuous render sill courses to first and ground floors. Segmental-arched door opening to east face of porch having replacement timber panelled door with plain overlight. Set back from road in own grounds with mature gardens and landscaping to site. Vehicular gateway to the north of site comprising a pair of rendered gate piers (on square-plan) having inset rectangular panels and stringcourse to shafts, moulded coping over, and moulded plinths to base, and having a pair of wrought-iron gates with finials over, gateway flanked to either side by pedestrian entrances having rendered gate piers and decorative cast-iron gates. Gateways flanked to either side by sweeping quadrant sections of rendered walls with decorative cast-iron panel railings over. Outbuildings to rear (not viewed). Located to the south of the centre of Carndonagh.

• Carndonagh District Hospital, graveyard/cemetery, 1845–1855 · Regional interest
  Description

  Former union workhouse graveyard on rectangular-plan, in use c. 1845 - 51, containing unmarked graves of victims of the Great Famine. Now out of use. Surrounded enclosed by whitewashed rubble stone boundary walls wall with upright rubble stones to coping. Garden to enclosure. Gateway to the south comprising a pair of roughcast rendered rubble stone gate piers (on square-plan) having pyramidal coping over surmounted by painted cross finial, and with modern gate. Signage to east pier reads ‘IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO DIED OF HUNGER’. Located on to the north-east of the site of Inishowen Union Workhouse complex (built 1843, demolished 1958), and to the east of the former workhouse infirmary (see 40805006). Located adjacent to road to the south-west of the centre of Carndonagh. Modern commemorative stone to the south-west.

• Mount Saint Mary Convent, graveyard/cemetery, 1870–1890 · Regional interest
  Description

  Burial ground for the former Sisters of Mercy convent established c. 1880. Entered from east, on square plan, enclosed by roughcast rendered walls with rounded ashlar coping. Cast-iron gate mounted on roughcast rendered piers with ashlar limestone pyramidal coping. Grass surface with range of cast-iron and wrought-iron gravemarker crosses, dating from c. 1880-c. 1960. Set within grounds of former convent.
