  Description

  Detached six-bay single-storey vernacular house, built c. 1800 and extended c. 1860, having single-bay brick windbreak porch to the front elevation (south), and with single-bay single-storey entrance porch to the rear (north). Pitched/domed reed thatched roof having ropes and wire mesh over secured on metal bar below eaves level, and with two rendered chimneystacks (one to the west gable end and one to the west side of the gable ends). Roughcast walls over rubble stone construction with smooth rendered plinth to base. Square-headed window openings with no sills and with replacement fittings. Square-headed door opening to front face of porch having battened timber door and batten timber gate to exterior. Road-fronted at corner site to the west of Greencastle.

• Inishowen Maritime Memorial, monument, 1995–2000 · Regional interest
  Description

  Memorial commemorating those from the Inishowen Peninsula who lost their lives at sea from 1771 on, erected 1997, comprising an ornamental bronze armillary sphere\astrolabe set on random rubble plinth (on circular-plan) with concrete top. Monument surrounded by coursed random rubble stone walls having smooth rendered coping over, and with bronze memorial plaques listing names of individuals lost at sea. Paved with limestone slabs having Celtic cross motif, and with water-rolled pebbles. Located adjacent to the piers at Greencastle Harbour, and adjacent to the south-east of Inishowen Maritime Museum (see 40810012).

  Description

  Mid-terrace three-bay single-storey house with attic level, built c. 1875. One of a terrace of five with its neighbours to either side (altered and not in survey). Pitched artificial slate roof with clay ridge tiles, projecting rendered eaves course, smooth rendered chimneystacks to either end, metal rooflight, and with cast-iron rainwater goods. Smooth rendered ruled-and-lined walls over projecting sloping rendered plinth course. Square-headed window openings with stone sills, and with six-over-six pane horned timber sliding sash windows. Segmental-headed door opening to the west end of the main elevation (south-east) with square-headed battened timber door having painted cast-iron letterbox and door handle, and with plain overlight. Road-fronted to the centre of Greencastle overlooking the harbour to the south.

• Inishowen Maritime Museum and Planetarium, customs station, barracks, 1820–1860 · Regional interest
  Description

  Former coastguard station and probable revenue barracks, built c. 1830 and extended c. 1860, comprising central advanced pedimented three-bay two-storey block (originally two dwellings) flanked to either side (north-east and south-west by three three-bay two-storey former coastguard houses having central single-bay single-storey gable-fronted entrance porches to each property having raised coping over. Projecting two-bay gable-fronted entrance porch to central block having two square-headed doorways. Central block now in use as museum with building adjacent to the south-west in use as tea rooms; majority of buildings now in private ownership. Large modern extension to the rear of central block. Hipped slate roof to central museum block with pitched roof to pediment having clay ridge tiles, cast-iron rainwater goods, raised cut stone coping to pediment and central smooth rendered chimneystack. Pitched natural slate roofs to dwellings (artificial slate to some sections), hipped to ends of terrace, having projecting cut stone eaves course brought across central block as stringcourse, central squared coursed rubble stone chimneystacks to each dwelling, and with cast-iron rainwater goods. Painted random rubble walls, roughcast rendered or smooth rendered to some properties; smooth rendered projecting finishes to porches with raised coping over; smooth rendered walls to museum with squared coursed rubble stone porch; painted plinth. Diamond shaped recess to centre-bay of houses at first floor level. Square-headed window openings to dwellings, some having exposed cut stone block-and-start surrounds, with painted stone sills, and generally with three-over-three pane horned timber sliding sash windows with some modern replacements. Square-headed window openings to central block having stone sills, and six-over-six pane horned timber sash windows at ground floor level and six-over-three pane horned timber sliding sash windows at first floor level; blind window to central bay at first floor level. Square-headed door openings to porches having timber panelled doors, some with cast-iron door furnishings; replacement doors to some properties. Set back from road in own grounds to the centre of Greencastle overlooking the harbour to the south. Small gardens to the front of each property having rubble stone boundary walls to road frontage to the south-east. Rendered rubble stone gate piers (on square-plan) to site, some retaining wrought-iron flat bar gates.

• St. Finian Church of Ireland Church, church/chapel, 1780–1790 · Regional interest
  Description

  Freestanding Church of Ireland church, built c. 1782 and altered c. 1865, having single-bay nave, two-stage tower (on square-plane) to the east having crenellated parapet over, shallow projecting chancel to the west having single-storey vestry attached to the south elevation. Pitched natural slate roofs with terracotta ridge tiles and raised ashlar gable copings, cut stone eaves course (brought partially around gable ends as stringcourse, and with cast-iron rainwater goods. Moulded cut stone coping to tower with cut stone coping over crenellations. Roughcast rendered walls over smooth rendered plinth course. Ashlar stringcourse to tower, delineating stages. Pointed-arch window opening to north elevation of nave having chamfered ashlar block-and-start surround, chamfered cut stone sill, and leaded windows; three graded cusped window openings to chancel gable having chamfered ashlar block-and-start surrounds, chamfered cut stone sills, and leaded stained glass windows. Paired square-headed window opening to vestry having ashlar block-and-start surrounds, cut stone mullion, chamfered stone sill, and with iron framed coloured glass windows. Pointed-arch openings to tower at belfry\second stage level having timber louvered fittings. Pointed-arch door opening to north side of tower having moulded ashlar surround, and timber panelled double-doors. Set back from road in own grounds in an elevated site to the west\north-west of the centre of Greencastle. Graveyard to the north of site with collection of mainly nineteenth-century and twentieth-century gravemarkers of mainly upstanding type; cast-iron and wrought-iron railed enclosures to some grave plots. Rubble stone boundary walls to site. Gateway to the north comprising a pair of rendered gate piers (on square-plan) having modern metal gates.

  Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c. 1820 and altered c. 1900 having single-bay single-storey glazed entrance porch to the centre of the main elevation (south-east), half-dormers oriel windows to attic at either end of the front elevation, two-storey return to the rear (north-west), and with modern sunroom extension to the south-west. Pitched natural slate roof with terracotta ridge cresting, projecting eaves supported on paired brackets, timber bargeboards and timber spear finials to dormer windows and to gable ends of main block, cast-iron rainwater goods, and with roughcast rendered chimneystacks to the gable ends. Pitched red terracotta tiled roof to porch with terracotta ridge cresting. Roughcast rendered walls with moulded smooth rendered stringcourse below eaves brackets; smooth rendered walls to porch having rectangular and diamond panels with architraved render surrounds. Square-headed window openings with stone sills, and with one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows. Smooth rendered walls to oriel windows having moulded rendered bases with pulvinated stringcourse and with dogtooth motifs. Square-headed window and door openings to porch having modern fittings. Set well-back from road in extensive mature grounds overlooking Lough Foyle to the south, and to the south-west of Greencastle. Detached multiple-bay two-storey outbuilding to the rear (north-west) having stepped pitched natural slate roofs with projecting cut stone eaves course and cast-iron rainwater goods, roughcast rendered rubble stone walls, square-headed window openings with mainly replacement timber casement fittings, and square-headed doorways and carriage-arches having battened timber fittings. Sunken two-bay boathouse to the east of site having earthen mound over, rubble stone walls, and segmental-headed opening to the east elevation with concrete lintel and paired openings with modern gates.

  Detached four-bay two-storey house, built c. 1820 and extensively altered c. 1900, having two-storey canted bay window to the north-east end of the main elevation (south-east), single-bay canted bay window to the south-west side of the main elevation, single-storey and two-storey flat-roofed box bay windows to the north-east side elevation, single-storey wing attached to the south-west side elevation having modern glazed sunroom attached to the south-east elevation, and with modern single-storey garage\outbuilding attached to the rear (north-west). Hipped slate roof with overhanging sprocketed eaves, grey clayware ridge tiles, and with two roughcast rendered chimneystacks to rear pitch (north-west) having terracotta pots over. Moulded eaves cornices to canted and box bay windows. Roughcast rendered walls over smooth rendered plinth course, and with render block-and-start quoins to the corners. Plain stringcourses and sill courses to canted bay windows, moulded sill course to two-storey box bay window to the north-east elevation. Slate-hung wall at first floor level to the rear elevation (north-west). Square-headed window openings with smooth rendered reveals, stone sills, and with one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows. Recessed depressed segmental-headed door opening to the centre of the main elevation (south-east) having smooth rendered reveal, replacement timber panelled door, sidelights over timber panelled stallrisers, and with plain overlight. Set well-back from road in extensive mature grounds overlooking Lough Foyle to the south, and to the south-west of Greencastle. Single-storey outbuildings to the west of site, single-storey boathouse to the south-west of site adjacent to Lough Foyle.

  Detached six-bay single-storey double-pile house, built c. 1800 and extended c. 1880, having gable-fronted entrance porch to the centre of the front elevation (south-east), modern single-storey flat-roofed single-bay summer room to the north-east end of the front elevation (south-east), canted bay window to the north-east side elevation, and with single-bay addition to the south-west side elevation. Pitched natural slate roofs with terracotta ridge tiles, two roughcast rendered chimneystacks with terracotta pots (one to either block of double-pile plan), and with cast-iron rainwater goods. Exposed rafter ends, timber bargeboards, and timber spear finials to gable apexes to gable-fronted porch and to single-bay extension to the south-west. Roughcast rendered walls. Square-headed window openings with smooth rendered reveals, painted stone sills, and with three-over-two pane horned timber sling sash windows; one-over-one pane horned timber sliding sash windows to canted bay; square-headed openings to side elevations of porch having fixed-pane timber windows with margin glazing bars with coloured glass to margin panels. Square-headed door opening to front face of porch having timber panelled double-doors. Set well-back from road in extensive mature grounds overlooking Lough Foyle to the south, and to the south-west of Greencastle. Located in shared grounds adjacent to the north-east of Portachappel House (see 40810018).

Set within own grounds with gable elevation fronting directly onto road. Complex of single-storey outbuildings to rear comprising of pitched corrugated-metal roofs and random rubble walls.

Central square-headed doorway having timber door with canopy porch over. Set slightly back from road with rendered boundary wall to road-frontage to the north. Detached single-storey outbuilding to the east having barrel-vaulted\rounded tar and felt roof, rendered walls and square-headed openings. Located to the south-west of Greencastle close to the Lough Foyle shoreline.
