Description
Castlestuke: In 1601, this castle is recorded as inhab-ited by Phelemy Brasleigh O'Doherty's son (CSPI 1600-1, 277). Shaw-Mason records the tradition that it was built by Phelemy Brasleigh O'Doherty to keep his children protected from the ravages of smallpox (I, 1814, 182-3). The location of this castle is probably to be identified with the remains on top of a stack, c. 4m high W of Dunmore Head (Davies and Swan 1939, 198). The top of the stack is c. 7m by 4m and has a subrectangular central depression c. 1.5m by 2.5m by .5m deep. Some courses of masonry are visible on the NW edge of the stack. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' Compiled by: Brian Lacey with Eamon Cody, Claire Cotter, Judy Cuppage, Noel Dunne, Vincent Hurley, Celie O'Rahilly, Paul Walsh and Seán Ó Nualláin (Lifford: Donegal County Council, 1983).
