  Description

  Situated on an upper crest of pastureland that falls away steeply to the S. A mound (L 27m; Wth 16m; H 2.5m) surveyed in 1942 by the field survey unit of the Archaeological Society, UCD. • DU024-021 Barrow - ring-barrow
  Description

  Situated to the E out Mountseskin House, on sloping of ground that falls away steeply to the SE. A ring-barrow comprised of a circular area (int. diam.37m) defined by an inner fosse and outer bank (bank Wth c. 4m; H 0.5m). The site was shown on the 1843 OS 6-inch map as a horseshoe-shaped enclosure. It was surveyed by the Archaeological Society, UCD in 1942. Not visible at ground level (Healy 1975, 1-19). • DU024-022 Barrow - ring-barrow
  Description

  Situated to the E of Mountseskin House, on a SE-facing slope in rich pastureland. A ring-barrow indicated as a roughly circular enclosure on the 1843 OS 6-inch map. It was still standing in the mid 1970s (diam. 16m) when inspected by Paddy Healy (1975, 1-19). It had been cut by a field boundary. Not visible at ground level. • DU024-023 Mound
  Description

  Situated to the E of Mountseskin House in an open field of rich pastureland that falls away to the SE. A small oval mound (L 10m; Wth 6.6m; H 2.8m) surveyed by the Archaeological Society, UCD, in 1942. It has since been removed leaving no visible trace at ground level (Healy 1975, 1-19). • DU024-024 Cairn - unclassified
  Description

  This cairn was situated on top of an elongated ridge that runs W of Knockannavea This was a circular, raised area, largely formed of cairn material (diam. c. 6m; H 1.2m). It was one of a group of cairns on Tallaght Hill and is marked on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as a circular mound. The site is not depicted on the revised 1863 OS 25-inch map suggesting it was somewhat more denuded by that time. A new forest track ran through the middle of the monument when it was inspected in 1994 (SMR file). An inspection of the area in 2013 suggested the monument was in a different location close by in a rectangular clearing to the E of the forest track. This specific location in the clearing in Mountseskin was the subject of an archaeological assessment in 2016 under licence No. 15E0509 The assessment was carried out by Edmond O'Donovan, the results of which were summarised as follows; 'This archaeological work was undertaken to establish and investigate ground adjacent to and around a ‘cairn’ that had been described as the site of a Recorded Monument (DU024-024----) where mechanical excavation had occurred. This report concludes that the surviving mound was modern and the disturbed area appeared to be of no archaeological significance and that the Recorded Monument (DU024-024----) appears to lies c. 10m to the northeast of the area where ground disturbance took place. The archaeological topsoil stripping and investigation of the mound on site was directed by O’Donovan between 16 February 2016 over a four day period to 19 February 2016. No archaeological material was uncovered during the archaeological digging on site, topsoil stripping and mechanical excavation of the mound site in 2016. The locations investigated corresponded with the locations where ground disturbance had previously occurred on or around December 2013. However, remains of a mound of possible archaeological derivation was identified 10m to the northeast on a forest track on lands not disturbed since the afforestation in c. 1993. This is thought to be the Cairn Site (DU024-024----). The site measures 8m in diameter. It is located on the shoulder of Mountseskin Hill where the ground falls on all four sides. The fall is more distinct to the north, south and west and is faint but evident to the east' (O'Donovan 2017).’ The Cairn Site that survives in the woodland is close to the location where the monument is depicted on the 1st edition OS map and corresponds with the topographical and physical description of the site as recoded in 1994 (SMR file). The mound in the clearing identified in 2013 was found to be modern and not of archaeological significance. • DU024-025 Cairn - unclassified
  Description

  Situated on the summit of Tallaght Hill at Knockannavea, on a right-angle bend in the townland boundary. A circular round-topped cairn (diam.22m; H 3.5m) covered in furze. There are no indications of kerbstones present. There is a central hollow where the cairn has been robbed of its stone. In 1994 this site was damaged when a forest road cut into the perimeter of the cairn in the N, W and NW. Both a metal and a wooden pole have been inserted into the edge of the monument in the NW and a metal tripod is positioned on the summit. • DU024-026 Cairn - unclassified
  Description

  This largely grass-covered cairn lies at the junction of three townland boundaries on Tallaght Hill. A circular in cairn (diam. c. 18m; H c. 3m). The stones from the top of the cairn have been robbed. There are no kerbstones visible. The SW quadrant is under forest and a NE-SW drain S of a field boundary, runs into the middle of the monument. In 1994 the cairn was further damaged when a newly constructed forest road cut through the base of the cairn on its N side. A shooting hide has been constructed on the top of the monument.
