• DU024-008 Barrow - ring-barrow
  Description

  Located in a forest clearing on the upper E-facing slopes of Saggart Hill immediately above the Slade Valley and overlooking the Verschoyles Hills (Kilbride-Jones 1950, 313-32). Prior to excavation of the site in the 1940s the site comprised a central mound (Wth 8.4m; H 1.2m) defined by a fosse (Wth 3.2m; D 0.7m), a bank (Wth 2m; H 0.75m) and an external v-shaped fosse (Wth 2.25m; D 0.84m; overall diam.41m). Both fosses had an outer retaining wall. Excavation revealed that the central mound covered two burials, both cremations, which were laid directly on a clay surface accompanied by Early Iron Age pottery. This composite site had been constructed over a habitation site and a timber structure referred to as a 'Sanctuary site' by the excavator. The habitation site consisted of five hut sites and a single communal fireplace. The 'Sanctuary site' was represented by three fireplaces and a total of 160 post-holes forming no clear pattern.   Description

  Situated NW of Glenareen House on steeply falling ground descending to the Slade valley. A stream runs to the S of it. An oval or subrectangular area extending N-S (L 36m; Wth 24m) defined by a bank (Wth 2.3-2.5m; H 1.2m) and outer fosse (Wth 2.5m; D 0.45m). The site is shown on the 1843 OS 6-inch map as a planted earthwork. Within the enclosure are three sites which are possible ring-barrows (DU024-009002-, DU024-009003-, DU024-009004-).   Situated on the crest of a ridge at the rear of Glenaraneen House. The ground falls away steeply to the Slade valley and there is a stream to the S of the site. A ring barrow, the southernmost (ext. diam. 14m) of three, is defined by an outer bank (Wth 2.3-2.5m; H 1.2m) and inner fosse (Wth 2.5m; D0.45m)(DU024-009002-). The southern section of this site is formed by the bank of the outer enclosing area. The central barrow (ext. diam. 12m) is defined by an outer bank (Wth 2.5m; H 0.3m) and inner fosse (Wth 1.1m; D 0.28m)(DU024-009003-). The N barrow (ext. diam. 11) is defined by an outer bank (Wth 2.5m; H 0.3m) and internal fosse (Wth 0.95m; D 0.25m)(DU024-009004-). The banks of the three possible ring-barrows are planted with scots pine, the outer barrow is planted with thorn.
