- GA058-098 Well
Description
On a terrace in rough pastureland sloping to the S, some outcropping limestone is visible. This well recently came to light when the landowner investigated a hollow in the ground. It is now surrounded by a recently built roughly oval-shaped rubble wall (av. Wth 0.7m; int. H 0.85m; ext. H 0.65-1m) capped with cement and is accessed by a step over style (Wth 0.6; H 0.4m) at W. The well itself is roughly funnel shaped. Its base (1.26m N-S; 0.76m av. dim. E-W) is 1.5m below ground level and it is lined with a randomly coursed drystone wall that fans outwards as it rises towards the surface (dims. at ground level 3.1m E-W; 1.55m N-S). Just inside the style, in the neck of the funnel (L 1.6m), the sides of which are straight, two rough steps lead down to the water. Traces of a relict field system (GA058-099002-) are visible c. 15m to the NNE. - GA058-099001 Enclosure
Description
In rough pastureland sloping to the S. Noted on current OSi aerial imagery (Digitalglobe 2011-2013), this subrectangular enclosure (c. 40m NE-SW; c. 29m ENE-WSE) is visible within a relict field system (GA058-099002-). It is defined by a collapsed and grassed-over stone spread (Wth c. 2.5m; H c. 0.5m). Field walls extending off it at NE, SE, SW and NW appear to be associated with the field system. A post and wire runs N-S immediately outside its W side. A possible cashel (GA058-099003-) lies c. 125m to the SW. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 29 November 2022
- GA058-099002 Field system
Description
In rough pastureland, with outcropping limestone, sloping to the S. This relict field system extends over an area c. 430m NE-SW by c. 370m NW-SE across modern fields, and is clearly visible on recent aerial imagery (Google Earth 2009; OSi MapGenie imagery 2013-2018) and on the ground. All the walls are defined by grassed-over collapsed stone spreads. An enclosure (GA058-099001-) and possible cashel (GA058-099003-) are located within it. The main features clearly visible on the ground are a small field (c. 18m N-S; c. 18m E-W) immediately to the S of the enclosure, to the S off which there is a larger rectangular field (ENE-WSW c. 31m; NNE-SSW c. 25m). The S side (Wth 0.6-0.8m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.5m) of the latter field is the best preserved wall. A lower, more collapsed, spread (Wth 2-3m; H 0.2-0.3m) extends off the W end of its S side and curves westwards but is obscured by furze growth. A small annexe or structure (int. dims. c. 3m E-W; 2.5m N-S; Wth of spread 2.5m; ext. H 0.5m at N) abuts the W end of its N side. A modern field wall cuts through this field, from its NE corner to just inside its SE corner, which is also well preserved. A second large field (c. 34m ENE-WSW; c. 30m NNE-SSE), subrectangular in plan, is visible c. 20m to the W of the enclosure. Its W wall continues further towards the N (L c. 50m) and then curves towards SE and extends to the NE corner of the enclosure. On the MapGenie aerial imagery, another field wall (L c. 100m), running NE-SW, and curving towards the W at its S end, is visible in the next field to the S. - GA058-099003 Ringfort - cashel
Description
In rough pasture sloping towards the SW, within the W half of a relict field system (GA058-099002-). This possible cashel (27.8m E-W), subcircular in plan, is defined by a grassed-over and completely collapsed stone wall (Wth 2.2-2.8m; int. H 0.3-.4m; ext. H 0.2-0.3m). It is heavily overgrown with furze, bramble and briars at SW and its outline is irregular in the N sector, where outcropping limestone is also visible. The interior slopes to the SW and more limestone outcrop is visible intermittently. Some thorn bushes are also growing in the interior. Aerial imagery (OSi MapGenie imagery (1995)) shows a smaller subcircular enclosure or annexe (c. 12m E-W; c. 10m N-S) immediately to the W of the cashel. An enclosure (GA058-099001-) lies c. 125m to the NE. Description
On a slight rise in low-lying pastureland. Marked on 1st ed. of OS 6-inch map as a bivallate circular enclosure with a circle of trees around the outer enclosing element. All that survives is a faint circular platform (D 37m) defined by a slight scarp.
