- GA084-021 Church
Description
On a rise in undulating pastureland, c. 350m to the SSE of the town of Athenry (see GA084-001----). This poorly preserved rectangular church, which is aligned E-W, now stands in the front garden of a house close to a byroad. It is probably of medieval date and only the heavily ivy-covered W gable (int. L 5.9m; H c. 4.5m) and short returns of the N (int. L 0.6n; H 0.5m; wall T 0.8m) and S ( int. L 1.3m; H 2.75m; wall T 1m) side-walls survive. No architectural features are evident. An 18th-century wall monument (GA084-021001-) is set into the roadside face of the wall to the left of the gate leading into the church. - GA084-021001 Memorial stone (present location)
Description
This memorial stone is set into the roadside face of the wall to the left of the gate leading into the church (GA084-021----). It consists of a rectangular plaque (H 0.43m; Wth 0.33m; T 0.13m) bearing a male figure standing with raised, spread arms in the top left quarter and a kneeling figure, in profile, with raised hands joined and looking towards the standing figure in the top right quarter. The figures appear to represent Christ on the cross and Mary alongside (Cody 1989, 381-2, no. 166). The lower half of the plaque bears the following inscription: PRAY FOR THE SOUL OF THOMAS [O'KELLY/O'REILLY?] HIS WIFE MARY HYNES & THEIR POS TERITY WHO EREC[T] ED THIS IMAGE IN R[E] MEMBERANCE OF SA[I] NT BRIDGET 1728 Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 24 January 2020
- GA084-022001 Ritual site - holy well
Description
In undulating pastureland, c. 14m to the S of a stream. Named ‘Toberblanra’ on the 1838 edition of the OS 6-inch map but known locally as ‘Lady’s Well’, this monument is still a place of pilgrimage. On inspection in November 1983, it consisted of a pool of water (1.4m N-S; 1.37m E-W; max. D 1.4m), with a tree on either side, within the NW area of a roughly square, mainly drystone-built enclosure (max. dims. 4.6m N-S; 4.2m E-W) with an entrance gap (Wth 1.45m) opening to the SE. A small recess (Wth 0.75m; H 0.4m; D 0.3m), at the E end of the N side of the enclosing wall, contained various modern objects of devotion and a possible carved stone, the latter was difficult to determine because of a heavy coating of whitewash. A concrete pier had been constructed immediately outside the wall, to the W of the entrance gap. A large statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, placed in a glazed box, stood upon it and a there was a smaller boxed statue beside it, to the right. On the opposite side of the gap, a curious arrangement of stones appeared to form a kneeling pad against the wall. A well-beaten pathway surrounded the enclosure and the base of a cross (GA084-022002-) was noted c. 4m to the SW of the well. Considerable work has since been carried out on the well and its environs as part of FÁS Schemes from 1987 to 1989, and in the 1990s when the area was developed as a park to celebrate the millennium year, 2000 (https://athenryparishheritage.com/our-ladys-well-by-canon-tony-king-p-p/ last accessed 5 January 2023). - GA084-022002 Cross
Description
Associated with a holy well (GA084-022001-). On inspection in November 1983, this almost square cross-base (0.76m N-S; 0.74m E-W; T 0.27m) with a mortise (0.23m N-S; 0.22m E-W), very slightly set off-centre, was lying flat on the ground c. 4m to the SW of the well. It was of unknown date. It is likely that the cross-base has been moved as a result of these works. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 5 January 2023 Our Lady's Well, Athenry By Canon Tony King P.P. - GA084-023 Fulacht fia
Description
In wet marshy grassland. This fulacht fia is defined by a poorly preserved subcircular mound (10.7m NE-SW; 8.9m NW-SE; H 0.6-1.1m). The trough area is not clearly evident and this may be the result of disturbance caused by livestock which has resulted in areas of burnt stone and earth being exposed.
