• GA006-026 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  On an E-facing slope in undulating grassland overlooking bog to SW. Well-preserved subcircular rath (N-S 59m, E-W 56m) defined by two banks of earth and stone and an intervening fosse. A gap (Wth 3.8m) at E appears original. A field bank overlies the outer bank from N to NE. Two earthen banks, possibly associated, radiate from the monument at S and SW.   Description

  In grassland W of Carrowroe House. Marked on 1st ed. of OS 6-inch map as an irregularly shaped enclosure (c. 45m by c. 40m) cut by a field boundary at NW and NE. Described locally as the site of a 'fort', but all that is visible is a slight rise in the ground surface marking its S limis. Another earthwork (GA006-027----) lay c. 80m to NNW.
