• GA106-050 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In undulating scrubland. This well-preserved subcircular rath (c. 40m NE-SW; c. 35m NW-SE) is defined by two banks and an intervening fosse. There is an entrance gap (Wth 3.2m) at E. A souterrain (GA106-050001-) lies in the NW quadrant of the interior. According to local information, human bones (GA106-050002-) were found in the vicinity of the souterrain. A large enclosure (GA106-050003-) lies immediately to the SW and the rath appears to overlie its NE quadrant. Compiled by: Galway Archaeological Survey, UCG Date of upload: 27 November 2017

• GA106-050001 Souterrain
  Description

  Located within the NW quadrant of a rath (GA106-050----), this souterrain is indicated by an L-shaped depression (L >12.9m), the long axis (L 7.2m; Wth 1.2m) of which runs N-S. The short axis (L 5.7m) extends from its NE end and runs E-W. Traces of drystone-walling are visible intermittently. A linear depression (L 4.8m Wth 1.5m) 1m further to the E is probably associated.   Description

  According to local information, a number of human bones were found in the vicinity of the souterrain (GA106-050001-) within the rath (GA106-050----). • GA106-050003 Enclosure
  Description

  In undulating scrubland. This large subcircular enclosure (c. 80m NW-SE; c. 78m E-W) is defined by two poorly preserved banks and an intervening fosse from ENE to SSE;; elsewhere a low irregular scarp forms the enclosing element. However, the outline of the fosse is clearly visible the on OSI aerial photographs. The townland boundary cuts through the monument at N and SSE. A rath (GA106-050----) overlies its NE quadrant.
