• GA058-088 House - 18th/19th century
  Description

  In a low-lying area of rock outcrop and scrub. Marked on 1st ed. of OS 6-inch map as a cluster of rectangular buildings. The visible remains comprise at least eighteen drystone-built houses, a series of collapsed field walls and three roadways. It covers an area c. 440m E-W by c. 250m N-S. The houses consist of one or two rooms, and are generally aligned roughly E-W, though they do not form any coherent plan. They measure c. 9m by 4m and generally have a gap in one of the side-walls. A number of their external corners are rounded, while the internal corners are right angled. The fields are defined by low grassed-over collapsed stone walls and vary in size from small garden plots to large rectangular fields. The three roadways (L c. 40m, Wth c. 5m) are defined by upright stones. An enclosure (GA088-089----) lies within W half of the cluster and a number of the houses lie within it.   Description

  Within a settlement cluster (GA058-088----). Poorly preserved subcircular enclosure (E-W 48m, N-S 44m) defined by a drystone wall. A number of modern gaps occur, but that at S (Wth 3m) appears to be original. Several houses, associated with the settlement cluster, lie within the monument, some abutting the inner face of the enclosing wall, and one at NE actually straddling it.   Description

  On a S-facing slope in otherwise level grassland. Quadrangular graveyard (E-W c. 45m) enclosed by an earthen bank overlain by a stone wall. In W sector of the interior, there is a small circular enclosure (D 18.2m) defined by an earthen bank which encloses a holy well (GA071-023002-). Though the earliest graves date only from mid-19th C, the monument may be of greater antiquity. • GA071-023002 Ritual site - holy well
  Description

  Within a graveyard (GA071-023001-). A circular spring well (D 0.85m), dedicated to St Patrick, situated in NE corner of a heavily overgrown drystone-built square well-chamber (L/Wth 2.5m). A step at S leads down to the water. On E wall, a plaque (H 0.7m, Wth 0.5m) dated 1688, depicts St Patrick standing on a snake and holding a double-armed cross. The well-chamber is bounded from S through W to NE by an embanked pathway (Wth c. 2m); else where it is densely overgrown. According to local information, pilgrims walked around the well, using this path, on the pattern day (date unknown). In the 18th C, the pattern day was stopped by the local bishop because a man was killed in the annual faction fight!
